The feds have bungled the vaccine rollout. The states are insisting on locking stranded Aussies out & locking the rest of us down because they can't get infection control basics right. So like so many other under-40s who want to do their bit I've gone & got the AZ jab this arvo.
Australian journalist Cheng Lei was suddenly detained on this day one year ago. She remains in detention. The National Press Club calls for her to be released so she can return to Australia and her family.
A year ago today, my former colleague Cheng Lei was detained in China. A single mother needlessly separated from her two children back in Australia.
Friends, colleagues and respected journalists have signed this letter pleading for compassion and reason in her case #FreeChengLei
We’ve now got at least eight clusters since last week with no source of acquisition:
- Hobson’s Bay couple
- Maribyrnong/Derrimut warehouse worker
- Melton fam
- RCH/St Michael’s father & son
- Brunswick West man
- 2 separate Glenroy households
- 4 cases under investigation today
Of 136 cases linked to Victorian outbreaks which have emerged since the 4th of August, 43, or 32 per cent, have been in quarantine for the duration of their infectious period, including 14 in Wednesday’s numbers, 15 in Thursday’s and eight in Friday's.
Why are there still more than 100,000 people in NSW waiting to receive support from the government?! This is outrageous!
How can you force people not to work and then not provide support? Why should they stay home?! What a monumental failure.
Of 121 cases linked to Vic outbreaks which have emerged since Wednesday last week, 35 have been in quarantine for the duration of their infectious period (29 of which were in yesterday or today’s numbers).
So that’s at least five mystery clusters since last week if we count Hobson’s Bay, Maribyrnong, yesterday’s Melton fam, the & RCH worker & his son, plus today’s four under investigation.

Of the locally-acquired cases, 17 have been linked to current outbreaks and 4 are still under investigation. 15 have been in quarantine throughout their infectious periods. [2/2]
A comparative COVID stat. On this day last year, Victoria’s second wave had already halved from its peak to 321 daily cases. In NSW, the current wave is either building or cresting at 344. It looks as though Sydney’s COVID winter will last longer than Victoria’s miserable 2020.
Of 100 cases linked to Vic's latest clusters since they emerged last week, 20 have been in quarantine for the duration of their infectious period. That includes 14 in today's numbers. It's these numbers that will be key to determining the length of the lockdown extension.
Fujitsu, IBM, Openpay, Atlassian and Canva are among a raft of tech and fintech firms offering staff paid leave to get their two Covid jabs. In Fujitsu’s case, contractors also qualify for paid leave. Via
