Don't know why ARK on singleplayer can't have more than one save. Nothing worse than a save getting corrupted and not being able to load back into it or the game having one of its many crashes and you lose 40 minutes of work or so. Games that autosave over an existing save also have a history of getting corrupted, should always save to a fresh slot.
Like OP I always have only one save named TheIsland.ark (along with TheIsland_NewLaunchBackup.bak and TheIsland_AntiCorruptionBackup.bak of course). It's my single player game, and my GameUserSettings.ini file has this setting : AutoSavePeriodMinutes=15.000000
A few weeks ago I was playing on my unofficial server. I had indeed a new dated backup file every two hours. Since I was always playing alone, I stopped renting a server and, using the last TheIsland.ark file I continued my game in single player mode. No issue noticed, except that like OP I don't have dated backup files anymore.
Not a big deal since I manually backup my files, but still an odd issue.
The in game singleplayer menu should have the option to at least.. rollback to the latest backup
SP mode really needs a TLC.
A gui option for rollbacks.
also the abilty to promote and demote mods in your active mod list.
I disagree with the gui option for rollbacks... at least in single player....in game with a massive warning stating new progress may be lost would solve alot of forum posts.

If they add a gui option to choose saved game to the the local/host section they could also add the ability to have multiple saves for the same map. Like if you wanted to let your kid play a game or you felt like doing a new with different rules/mods etc.
Currently both rollbacks and having multiple saves games requires manually moving and renaming files.

They could put all that in the menu... it would require seperate gui/game.ini for each save..... not to mention the potential to blow out the save folder with multiple saves/backup saves. With a single gui/game.ini .... you would run into problems with settings carrying over to incorrect saves.... i can see the forum fireworks already lol.
But seriously... it all needs to be in the main menu... with gui/game.ini as an option for those comfortable with editing them..... wich the masses arent

I look at game like skyrim with 3rd party mod managers to manage mods and saved games. Something like this built into SP would be great.
