Initially I understand this will be used to perform client side scanning for cloud-stored photos. Eventually it could be a key ingredient in adding surveillance to encrypted messaging systems.

The ability to add scanning systems like this to E2E messaging systems has been a major “ask” by law enforcement the world over. Here’s an open letter signed by former AG William Barr and other western governments.

The way Apple is doing this launch, they’re going to start with non-E2E photos that people have already shared with the cloud. So it doesn’t “hurt” anyone’s privacy. But you have to ask why anyone would develop a system like this if scanning E2E photos wasn’t the goal.

But even if you believe Apple won’t allow these tools to be misused 🤞there’s still a lot to be concerned about. These systems rely on a database of “problematic media hashes” that you, as a consumer, can’t review.

Hashes using a new and proprietary neural hashing algorithm Apple has developed, and gotten NCMEC to agree to use. We don’t know much about this algorithm. What if someone can make collisions?

Imagine someone sends you a perfectly harmless political media file that you share with a friend. But that file shares a hash with some known child porn file?

The idea that Apple is a “privacy” company has bought them a lot of good press. But it’s important to remember that this is the same company that won’t encrypt your iCloud backups because the FBI put pressure on them.

This is interesting. This could also be used to find out who is spreading propaganda, leaks, gov/corp secrets, controversial memes. This also allows the ability to see the hierarchy of how things are shared. I could see this as a political weapon. All it takes is a court.

Speaking 💯 for myself here. Apple is pretty late to the party. Pretty much every other ESP (Electronic Service Provider) is already doing some version of this. You don’t get to store your Child Sex Abuse Material / Media on remote storage & throw a fit about privacy. Sorry.

From a technical POV, such a system will probably be easy to beat (false negatives) and spoof (false positives) at least for a while, maybe a long time. ANNs are very susceptible to adversarial strategies and it’s hard to imagine that fundamentally changing in current paradigms.

So it’s probably ineffective against actual evil actors because they’re worried about being caught. The rest of though, with our good old fashioned surveillable data without adversarial filters will be the losers as usual.

I think people have decided everything is already being seen and have somewhat decided not to look further into how specifically that is the case. The iPhone is majorly convenient.

Possibly dumb question... But don't they already have this (or something similar capability wise) for cloud sync? Hash the file, check to see if it's indexed and if not sync it to iCloud. They also would probably use something similar for iTunes for song matching etc?

It's similar but the design goals of a CSAM detector are: 1-way; hashes only identify CSAM; indifferent to filters, crops, rotations, or byte changes; and ideally the system can't be used against itself, e.g., like malware crypters bypass AV.
