The Lukachukai Replacement School project is located on a new 44-acre site surrounded by beautiful views of the Chuska mountain range. The project consists of a new K-8 school, student dormitory, bus maintenance facility, community fire station, and staff housing.
The design of these new facilities reflect the Navajo culture and values while following BIA guidelines for individual space design, materials, and durability. The design/build team of NEZ/FCI and D/P/S worked closely with School Board members, staff, and cultural experts on siting, layout, and inter-relationship of the various facilities on campus.
The new school is pursuing LEED Silver certification and will create a 21st century healthy learning environment with ample daylight and plenty of outdoor learning opportunities.
The project is on a tight 26-month fast-track schedule which integrates BIA review milestones with multiple construction packages.
Lukachukai Community School's groundbreaking ceremony was held in September 2020 and was attended by school board members, the Lukachukai community, Mr. Myron Lizer, Navajo Nation Vice President, and Mark Cruz, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Policy and Economic Development from the U.S. Department of the Interior Indian Affairs.
This project is currently on schedule in the design phase and anticipated to be completed in time for Fall 2022 opening of the new school.
