I’m a vaccinated anaesthetist and this is how I shop for my family.
A thread 1/n.

Preparation is key. If possible, I go at quieter times or click and collect if I’m organised.
If I need to go in, I have my respirator mask, sanitiser, a list, and the bags which I always forgot pre-pandemic. 2/n

Current rules are that maximum one person per household can go each day. We minimise this as much as possible. Either my hubby or I go. Never together. No kids. 3/n

Once parked I put on my respirator. I’m in healthcare so have a stock of self-purchased N95’s in the car. I take a moment to ensure that it is fitted correctly. No leaks. 4/n

Once inside, it’s a race. I assume I have covid. I assume everyone else has covid. I shop with laser sharp focus. No browsing. I avoid crowded aisles. Keep distant. Get only what I need, touch only what is necessary. I don’t squeeze every avocado to see which is ripe…. 6/n.

So why do I do this? Am I outta my mind? I didn’t care about germs before the pandemic.
Well, in my job we are all about risk minimisation. I want to protect myself, my family, my patients and my colleagues. I don’t need to spend ages faffing about in there. 8/n

I don’t want to bring covid into my hospitals. I want to do all I can as an individual to minimise risk.
Also, if the supermarket ends up being an exposure site, I don’t want contact tracers to need to trace me and my contacts. 9/n

Kudos to all the folk doing the right thing, and those working frontline in our supermarkets. 10/fin.

I am still doing 100% of my shopping online with contactless curbside pickup only. My entire family is double vaxxed but this isn’t over yet.

I’m having groceries delivered - everything else is not needed atm and I am saving money - but if you have to go out this is certainly the way to do it

Yes that is much better.

If you're fully vaccinated, this degree of precaution in a mostly empty grocery store is nonsense.

Agree with transmission fomites vs aerosol, but imho entry/exit not excessive. We have very low vax rates. My approach may benefit, and has few downsides. Was disturbed today to see groups of people inside, browsing. Nice to see most masked up though.

As a supermarket worker I thank you and everyone like you. And, I'll do everything I can to minimise the chances I'll be spending any time in your workspace.

Great thread Tanya.
Sounds familiar - we have always had the virus everywhere.
‘Keep the virus at bay.’
Don’t let it near you or on to others - keep it lonely.
Ps: Liking the big warm mask smiles -thanking the shop staff.

level 4 in NZ.. was like this at the supermarket. This was last March. Controlled entry, everyone in masks, groups not permitted, shopping only once a week. Its part of the reason the approach here was so sucessful

That’s amazing! I’m in the US and we aren’t doing anything like that here.

I'm doing it all on line and pay the <$10 delivery fee. I think it's worth it. Was most difficult the first couple of times.
While it's easy - I'm soon gonna have to do a personal visit because it starts to be difficult to work out which f&veg are in season (=cheep n good)

This is brilliant.
I also wipe down my phone and card in the car and wipe down the groceries before putting them away

I wear a gas mask and three N95 masks to bed every night. What if my bed sheets got covid while I was in the living room? You can never be too safe.

Our new normal Tanya. I am glad you wrote it as we health carers are highly aware of the need to do this and perhaps others may not take this approach. Well described Tanya. I thought i was the only one.

I think many of us do this, but don’t often talk about our routines publicly m. We don’t want to lecture anyone else… but I hope that by raising it we can open a conversation where we can collectively consider little things to decrease transmission risk.

Every time we go into lockdown I buy a big box of chocolates in the supermarket and hand them to the staff on the way out.

I'm doing near exactly the same thing, and at the end, when I'm home with the shopping, it all gets bleached and sanitised as best I can.
It's a total ball ache, but it's part of the ritual now.
Is it mad to still be bleaching the shopping?

Probably limited need for them in a non healthcare setting, but for $15 there’s no harm wearing them. On the plus side, everyone else figures you are serious and keep away from you!

I live in Kiama, outside the lockdown, but play it as if it was. I doubt I'm as focussed as you and I have a blue mask but do the list, avoidances, sterilizing etc. Thankfully, our Woolies has everyone in masks. Outside is pretty good too. Not perfect but not like some photos.

Nice. Most folk doing the right thing, a few doing group and couple meandering….

Is anyone still wiping down (sanitizing) everything they bought, once they get home?

I don’t want to live like that, that’s not living that’s just outright fear.

The whole thread was bonkers but the assuming you have covid and everyone around you also has covid tipped it over. Double jabbed & presumably tested regularly, yet still operating under OTT hypervigilance. Nearly 2 yrs on, I need to ask: until when? Forever?

Imagine living in fear like this, the horrible anxious feeling constantly. I feel really sorry for you and your family. That’s no way to live.

Actually I’m not anxious. I feel safe and strong, controlling what I can.
