Dad confronts daughter's short shorts in hilarious parenting move: 'I will wear mine!'
An Orlando dad is getting major parenting props for the hilarious way he handled his teenage daughter's too-short jean shorts.
Jason Hilley shared the video on Facebook that his wife Alison Hilley captured. In it, the 39-year-old dad of two confronts his 14-year-old daughter Kendall for her fashion choice, all while wearing itty bitty, tattered jean shorts himself.
"You wear yours out in public?" he wrote. "I will wear mine! Parenting 101!"
Hilley told USA TODAY what led up to that moment.
"We are always joking around as a family," he said. But like any dad, he has struggled "seeing his little girl develop into a teenager."
He was quick to praise his daughter for being a straight-A student, but knows every teenager is going to try to push the limits.
Uh-hmmmm.
'These aren't even that short!'
Several weeks prior, Kendall had tried to go out, but "not in those jean shorts," dad told her.
Sadly, the family's house burned down Jan. 1, 2017 and they lost everything, he told USA TODAY. They were able to rebuild, but have slowly been buying things that they need as they need them. Apparently, they hadn't gotten around to getting Kendall new shorts. So he told his daughter to go online and get new, longer jean shorts.
Flash forward to Kendall trying to go out again, but dad stops her.
"I said, 'Well, Kendall we had this discussion. You aren't going out in those shorts. Go back in your room and put on your new ones.' "
She looked at him and said, "These are my new ones."
That's when dad and his 8-year-old son Walker got the idea. They grabbed an old pair of jean shorts, cut and rolled them up, and headed for Kendall's room.
Luckily, mom grabbed the camera.
"I will pick you up from school every day with these on," Hilley jokes in the video.
Then, through laughter, the two have a measuring contest to see whose shorts are shorter.
It ends with Kendall saying, "These aren't even that short!" and dad immediately responds, "Noooo neither are mine!"
The response has been 'crazy'
Hilley's post as been shared more than 245,000 times and has more than 11,000 comments.
"That's crazy," Hilley told USA TODAY. He said that most of the comments have been positive.
Hilley and his wife had been trying to delete any derogatory or inappropriate comments but finally just gave up and stopped reading them.
He plans to keep the post up, despite any negativity. He says it is a "fun learning moment" and an example of parenting in a way without yelling.
"If you do something with a little bit of humor to it, even in a serious manner, they (teenagers) are more open and adaptive to communicating with their parents," he said.
For the record, Kendall has been wearing her longer athletic shorts lately, and her parents plan to take her shopping for new, dad-approved jean shorts.
