My wife and I attended the Jan. 5 performance of Shen Yun. It is an understatement to say that we were disappointed.
We arrived expecting a performance “reviving 5,000 years of civilization.” What we got was two hours of propaganda for a movement dating all the way back to 1991. The banner summarized it succinctly for those dulled by tedious musical compositions, cartoon-like computer graphics, trap doors or flashy colors: “Falun Dafa is Good.“
We paid a premium for seats that would provide us an excellent view of Chinese tradition. Instead, we contributed unwittingly to a religious movement that denies evolution and science, claims the earth was inhabited by aliens, demonizes atheists and homosexuals and condemns mixed marriages.
There is no reason to deny that Chinese Communists persecute the movement. Buddhists and Uighers are more venerable traditions that also feel that persecution. However, I resent being duped into supporting this religious movement. This is not a proper use of the Lakeland Center.
