Klei Entertainment Inc.
Overview
Klei Entertainment is an independent game development studio based in Vancouver, Canada. It was established in July 2005 by Jamie Cheng who previously worked as an AI programmer at Relic Entertainment. To fund the company he sold his THQ shares and borrowed $10,000 from his brother. The studio's creative team is led by Jeffrey Agala who directed the television cartoon series Atomic Betty. In its history, the studio has released five games based on three intellectual properties. The first two titles formed the Eets puzzle platformer series: Eets: Hunger. It's emotional. (2006) and Eets: Chowdown (2007). The second series was the over-the-top violent Shank series with Shank (2010) and Shank 2 (2012). Shank is a homage to the classic side-scrolling beat-em-up games. Klei also contributed to the 2008 XBLA game N+. The company has released for the platforms Windows, Macintosh, Xbox 360 (XBLA) and PlayStation 3 (PSN). All their titles have hand-drawn graphics, a vivid colour palette and a cartoon-like animation style.
Between 2008 and 2010 the company worked on the free-to-play MMO brawler Sugar Rush for Nexon Corporation. The project was in closed beta, but Nexon announced to close its Canadian development division Humanature Studios in January 2009 and then said in July 2009 to close the game's website. The project's status was uncertain until Klei Entertainment stated in August 2010 that the project was cancelled.
Klei Entertainment most recently finished Mark of the Ninja. The game was announced in February 2012 through the choose-your-own-adventure interactive fiction game Mark of the Ninja teaser. The full game was released in September 2012.
