YARDLEY >> Yardley Borough resident Michelle Sharer, known affectionately around town as Yardley’s Duck Lady, will autograph copies of her newly-published book, “Alfalfa - The Story of a Duck from Lake Afton in Yardley, PA,” on Small Business Saturday, November 24 from Noon to 3 p.m. at Ye Olde Yardley Florist, 175 South Main Street, Yardley 19067.
In her new book, Sharer documents the life of Alfalfa, a white Pekin duck she helped raise from a hatchling to the age of six. The two became almost inseparable, earning Michelle the title of ‘The Yardley Duck Lady’ in a town that prizes its waterfowl.
The pages of the book are filled with heartwarming photos of Michelle and her feathery companion who never went far without his “monkey.”
“Having the opportunity to raise Alfalfa and having him as my pet for six years turned out to be one of the best things in my life and brought me much joy,” said Sharer. “Given another opportunity to save and incubate one or more abandoned eggs at Lake Afton, I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”
A lifelong resident of Bucks County, Sharer worked as a psychiatric and mental health nurse before she left the work force due to a work injury and other chronic pain. Not working allowed her time to volunteer as a board member with the Friends of Lake Afton, a nonprofit committed to restoring, improving, protecting and maintaining the lake for the benefit of the public and the local wildlife. She is now the president of the organization.
Proceeds from the sale of the book will support the ongoing maintenance of Alfalfa’s home - Yardley’s picturesque Lake Afton. Donations supporting the lake may be sent to the Friends of Lake, P.O. Box 529, Yardley 19067.
