Tomb Raider 2013 QTE's | |
BANNED Posts: 5662 Joined: 15 Apr 2011 | *May contain minor spoilers.* So I just got the new Tomb Raider for the PC, and I can't freaking do the QTE's. I've never been bothered about them in other games, I've always enjoyed God of War and the previous QTE rich Tomb Raider games. But for some reason, about half of the QTE's in this game I just cannot do. The second one where you're escaping the collapsing cave system and someone grabs your legs. I get the tapping A & D. But the next button in the sequence isn't highlighted. It comes up with a circle that closes in on another circle (I assume for some sort of timing) but no matter what button I press, it simply won't work. The only reaction I get is when pressing the LMB. (Sometimes F looks like it's doing something too.) It flashes yellow for a second but then shows me a very nice cutscene of Lara being squished by a boulder. This cutscene got tiresome! I ended up having to plug in my 360 pad and use that. Got through first time. But then I started coming across these QTE's in standard gameplay. Like when a wolf jumps you if you fumble the arrow shot etc. And I simply don't want to play the game with a gamepad. I bought it on PC for a reason. And now I'm up to the second required QTE using this phantom command. When the Russian guy with the gun drags me out of the hiding area and I assume I'm supposed to head-butt him. Does anyone have any tips for me here? Like what button I'm supposed to be pressing. Because this is seriously starting to fuck up an otherwise enjoyable game. I don't want to have to play this entire thing with a game pad. User was banned for: Poll: Your child comes out as a psychotic murder addict. (Permanent) |

yea, I figured it out by finding out what Y on the 360 pad did in-game and then figuring out which key corresponded to it on the keyboard. The QTE's are easy enough now. Rest of the game is a lot of fun.
I think that's the issue I had. I always enable subtitles. Thanks all. User was banned for: Poll: Your child comes out as a psychotic murder addict. (Permanent) |

The thing is, in those cutscenes there was no icon what so ever for me. Just an empty circle with another circle closing around it. The other qtes have symbols, like the hand or the leg. The action qtes are completely blank for me. I don't know if thats a glitch or something but it's really unintuitive. User was banned for: Poll: Your child comes out as a psychotic murder addict. They're not actually blank, I think there should be a skull icon in the smaller circle. That's the meelee or F key (by default). |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 723 Joined: 13 Dec 2010 | I'm playing it on a wired 360 controller and I still can't do the damn QTEs! I can see what button to press but my timing sucks, apparently. I'm 33% of the way into the game, according to the save game menu, and I've died at least once on every single QTE in the game. It's bloody annoying. I don't mind easy QTEs (though I'd much prefer a straight cutscene) but I hate difficult QTEs cos they just interrupt the flow of the game. And there are a LOT of them in this game. Anyway... This bit is slightly off-topic but I don't want to start a whole thread to ask one question so here goes: is there any way to get some sort of auto-aim for the controller on the PC? I don't know why but I'm finding the aiming in this game really difficult... like, even more difficult than controller-aiming normally is. I've tried adjusting the aim sensitivity all the way up and down but it doesn't seem to do anything at all; there seems to be literally zero difference between MAX and MIN aim sensitivity on the controller. Is anyone else finding this a problem? Any solutions? Edit: I just realised something. I'm playing with Triple Buffering enabled, which creates a one-frame input lag. I play with TB enabled in most games and I'm used to aiming with it, so it doesn't explain my aiming trouble, but it might explain why I keep mis-timing the QTEs. Just figured I'd post this little brainwave in case it helps someone. |
Insert one-liner here. Posts: 5398 Joined: 13 Sep 2010 | Yeah i found that rather onfusing when i ran into them in the first 10 mins of the game, i didnt get a button propmt i got an icon. Fortunately the button mapping menu tells you what theese icons are or i would have flipped the table and called it worst QTEs ever. |

Id say just get used to it. I found it awkward at first but i got the hang of it eventually. Maybe because its the same system used in the PC version of Hitman: Absolution. |

Hmm, that doesn't help much. I've play quite a lot of third person console shooters on my PC (using my 360 controller) with no trouble. In fact I usually have to crank up the difficulty a bit to make it challenging, even with a controller. There's definitely something... different... about the aiming in this game. |

It's not doing a very good job of conveying the feeling of distress that Lara should be feeling. I like the concept of QTEs, but feel like they're dreadfully executed in almost every game. One of the only games I liked them in was Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, because they were organic, didn't have prompts on the screen and never required you to mash buttons. Compared to what? This game has more QTEs than any game I've played since... actually, come to think of it, the last game I played with this many QTEs was a Tomb Raider game. |

Compared to the rational sense of measure of a level-headed person. I've played for many hours and qtes take up barely minutes put together. If you hate them so much that it is enough to ruin everything the game has to offer for you then I'd say you have a problem. |

I never said or meant to imply that the QTEs are "ruining everything the game has to offer". It's a very good game, with the potential to be a great game in the later stages (which I've not reached yet). It's just a shame about the QTEs, of which there are many compared to other games I've played. |
Beat Writer Posts: 162 Joined: 29 Nov 2012 | The game opens up quite a bit after the first few hours and there's less and less QTEs after that. |

I'm sorry if I misinterpreted you. I thought you were taking issue with me and making a big deal out of the things or something. I don't feel the amount of qtes is out of the ordinary and I'm fairly indifferent about them compared to most people. They can add a little atmosphere in places. |

That may be what's supposed to be displayed, but I assure you, they are blank circles when I'm playing. They sometimes flash with an exclamation mark symbol when you fuck them up, but even that is sporadic. The other QTE's like steadying grip or jumping a ledge come up with the hand and foot icons respectively. But the action QTE's. Blank. I haven't seen a skull icon in the QTE's at all. Anonymous Source Posts: 1 Joined: 7 Mar 2013 | That's because there is no skull icon for QTE's. The icon for melee attack IS the exclamation mark and you can verify this by checking the controls in the menu. The exclamation mark does not indicate that you failed, failure is a slash icon. And the skull icon is for finishing moves during battle. |

Premium Member Posts: 2367 Joined: 8 Jun 2011 | Seriously screw this game. They should of called it quick time raider. I Thought we were done with this sort of gameplay, so far I've played this game for a couple hours and all I've got to do is light stuff on fire jump a little and shoot a bow, beyond that there hasn't been any other game play. Plus the quick time events are stupid they don't tell me what button to press it just shows a symbol sometimes the symbol is totally bizarre, what does a red exclamation mean?! *press left mouse button* Lara dies.... I'm sorry I just don't enjoy this game, they should of just made it a moive it would of been less frustrating to play and they could of made it as cinematic as they'd of liked. |
I never asked for this Posts: 7858 Joined: 8 Sep 2011 | I didn't have any trouble with QTE's. I still think that the developers should have known better than to include QTE's because nobody likes them. And hopefully they won't rely on them in the sequel. |

Muckraker Posts: 259 Joined: 20 Jun 2012 | Hmm thats weird when I did the beginning There was a tutorial. And frankly never had any problem with the quick times, they barely show up anyway Edit 2: The game was really easy lol it took me less then 24 hours of real time to beat it. |

e is displayed by a hand symbol, f is a circle closing in. while the quick time evens become less and less troughout the game, the ones that pop up are quite unforgiving and give you very little time to react. It's a bug. Hopefully they patch that shit soon. |
