So they had separate elevators for Japanese and foreigners. What the fuck is happening?! I’m so angry. This kind of shit shouldn’t be happening. The world needs to know about this, considering this is the Olympic Host City.

Japan has NO condition to hold Olympics now.
Residents are poorly vaccinated, olympians and staff and press enter the country with insufficient quarantine. Vaccinated people doesn’t mean you don’t carry nor transmit COVID.
So it’ll be a super spreader.

They think only foreigners are spreading covid, not Japanese.

I would straight up ride the Japanese one. They need to understand there are foreigners who -live here- and didn’t just get off a plane and walk on in.

Many hotels in Tokyo are now being used as quarantine facilities for those who have come to Japan for the Olympics. I think this is to prevent contact between the general guests and the quarantine people although this is an insufficient measure.

Something like that in Europe and newspapers will take about that for one week

Exactly. I wish Japan got the same treatment.

Holy shit …. We actually stayed at that hotel in January of 2020. If I remember correctly it’s connected to a Swedish restaurant and was right across from a massive Olympic store and Bic Camera

I like this, it ensures that the elevator will be almost empty. It's kinda like when no one sits next to me on the train. "Thanks for the comfort."

I'm that person who never has the empty seat problem. My problem is people who crowd my space. Even sleep on me. :/

Okay. That crosses a line. I don't travel much anymore, but my first thought would be to stake a claim to the front desk and ask with calm persistence for a written explanation of who set this policy and what it is meant to accomplish. CYA culture FTW.

Separate for us Japanese residents and the unvaccinated, not really quarantining Olympic entourage. They should be quarantined at the Japanese government hotels and served cold obentos just like we are! Instead they take the elevator and avail themselves to the hotel buffets. Ugh

The fear of the possible complaint or possible discomfort for a customer outweighs all logical thinking, creating this.

sorry. The correct intention of the hotel is unknown, but I apologize for being very embarrassed as a Japanese person welcoming guests from abroad. Then, encourage them to withdraw and post an apology.

This country gives me again and again reasons for disliking it. I was once in love Japan, wtf even?

I sort of understand the twisted thinking and poor communication behind this, but the complete lack of awareness and sensitivity is still offensive. Nothing has really changed; the Covid-19 + Olympic debacle is just bringing it to the surface.

Foreigners who live in Tokyo should converge on the hotel, ride up and down in the elevator all day, and calmly insist 外人じゃないですよ。

Exactly what I thought — what about foreign RESIDENTS??

What's next, separate restrooms? I didn't know that Japan is an apartheid country. The manager of this hotel should apologise.

Since foreigners are more likely to contract and spread covid a priority vax site(s) should be set up and running immediately.

Do you have any evidence for the statement "foreigners are more likely to contract and spread covid" or is that just straight-up prejudice?

I would reply to everything with... "its sad ioc can bully Japan into being xenophobes and risk its own citizens to a pandemic" to every 日本人 that treats you like this.

This is a “using Corona as a poor excuse” thing

Ever the data scientist, I thought that's because the Japanese are more innoculated. Turns out, they are less inoculated - 17% (Japan) vs 48% (US). Having worked in Japan, I get that they're often ...cough...cough ... uncomfortable ...cough...cough ... around us gaijin.

This person apparently made a generous move to remind the hotel about the serious repercussion. The hotel clerk admitted they made a mistake in an attempt to segregate Olympic staff with other guests. They said they’ll make some remedy asap. Thanks for pointing this out

Maybe it’s to protect foreign visitors with a higher level of vaccination
rate than Japan?
Seriously though how did this get approved to put up? Likely to avoid complaints from Japanese guests not open minded enough to consider a foreigner might live here, not Olympian.
