That's a toilet...
1
I was debating whether or not to tell you not to answer. I almost barred anyone who has been to Japan to from answering but I don’t know if they’re common or uncommon enough that you can go to to Japan and never see one
2
I'd certainly never seen one until I moved into my new apartment with one!
1
Was that the haunted apartment?
1
No, my first apartment in Nara. The haunted apartment was the third place I lived in Japan, after I got off JET.
1
What was it like seeing it for the first time? Had you even heard of it before?
1
Nope. It was an....adventure. But so was everything in Japan. I was wholly unprepared. But that's what made it fun.

In contrast, how many fancy hi-tech toilets that you see in every movie or tv episode set in Japan did you see?
1
The fantasy of "hi tech Japan" vs the reality of rural Japan was a huge shock. The toilet was nothing compared to the single-pane windows and no insulation or heating. Imagine a house where you keep things in your refrigerator to keep them warm. Otherwise they freeze.

My god how does one survive?
I’ve also heard that they’re not as quick to upgrade their technology the way Americans are. Like there’s still Japanese people using flip phones and stuff like that. Did you notice that too?
1
Japan is still the leading consumer of fax machines in the world. I found almost everything in Japan, both technologically and socially, to be about twenty years behind the use. Maybe fifty years socially....
2
“Socially”? How are they behind socially? Am I not going to not like this answer?

Well, you know. Japan is super racist, sexist, homophobic, fatphobic, and .... pretty much everything else. They rank 110 out of 144 countries in terms of gender equality. Japan gonna Japan.

Hm, I guess I kinda knew about that stuff. A friend told me that the reason that black and Hispanic characters are rare in Disney Tsum Tsum is because “Japan doesn’t like brown people”

Of course, the lack of brown Disney characters in Tsum Tsum can be attributed to the fact that there’s a lack of brown Disney characters period, but the fact that Miguel from Coco and Lilo from Lilo and Stitch are only available as limited editions makes one go hmm
