Con's

  • "Nursing Bottle caries" babies and toddlers can develop tooth decay when gums/teeth are left with sugary liquids/milk on them for a long period of time.
  • Formula and bottles can get very expensive.
  • Have to be careful not to make the mixture to hot, strong or cold.
  • Babies do not get the antibodies found in breast milk which means they are more likely to develop illnesses such as diarrhea, chest, ear or urine infections.
  • It can be time consuming when preparing.

Difference Between Breast feeding and Formula Feeding?

How does a fetus get rid of waste?

Breathing Surrogate

The fetus pees and poops in its amniotic fluid however its waste is sterile because its not exposed to bacteria in the environment. Fetus's normally don't carry solid waste in their amniotic fluid because their waste isn't made up like an adults, its made up of dead cells being removed from the body which looks like a tar like substance that's not full of harmful bacteria.

First Breath

  • Prolactin is secreted by the pituitary gland and is responsible for the alveoli making milk and rises when the baby suckles.
  • The hormone Oxytocin causes the muscles around the aveoli to squeeze milk out of the milk ducts. This is known as the Let-down Reflex.
  • Let-down reflex can also be caused by hearing the baby cry or thinking about the baby.
  • Oxytocin also causes the uterus to return to its original size and reduce bleeding.

Surfactant reduces the surface tension of fluid in the lungs and helps make the small air sacs in the lungs (alveoli) more stable. This keeps them from collapsing when an individual exhales.

Breast Feeding Con's

As soon as the baby takes its first breath, the blood vessels in the lungs dilate and the air sacs in the lung “Open Up”, and help to squeeze the rest of the fluid from the lungs.

Surfactant

  • Baby should not suck on the bottle or pacifier before they are used to breast feeding or they may have nipple confusion and decide the bottle is the better/faster option.
  • When the baby is properly latched on, the mother may experience latch-on pain which is caused by the nipple and areola being pulled into the babies mouth.
  • Can cause physical and emotional pain for the mother if it takes a while for the baby to latch-on and feed.
  • Mother cannot drink alcohol or it may be transferred to the baby through the milk and she may have to change her diet.
  • Some mothers are not comfortable nursing in public places.

Pro's

  • Provides the best source of nourishment for the baby
  • During the first few days after the baby is born, the mammary glands produce colostrum which contain anti-bacterial and immune system boosting substances.
  • The flow of colostrum is very slow which allows the baby to learn how to nurse and coordinate sucking, breathing and swallowing.
  • Breast milk is easier digested making babies less constipated and gassy.
  • Breast feeding can lower the occurrence or severity of diarrhea, ear infections, and bacterial meningitis.
  • May protect against SIDS, Diabetes, obesity and asthma.
  • Lowers the mothers risk of breast cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and ovarian cancer.
  • Provides a bonding experience between the mother and child.
  • Prevents over-feeding.
  • No need to sterile bottles or formula.

Breast Feeding Pro's and Con's

Formula Feeding

First Breath

LIFE AFTER BIRTH

Formula Feeding

When the mother breaks before delivery , the staff check to see if it has stool in it. If it does they need to suction the baby right away to keep it out of the babies lungs. When the baby is inside of the womb, stool cannot enter the lungs but as soon as the baby emerges and takes its first breath... it can inhale waste which can cause respiratory problems

Pro's

  • Formula is also a healthy choice for babies because it is the next best possible alternative to breast milk.
  • Baby can be fed by anyone, anytime and the mother doesn't have to worry about pumping enough milk or re-arranging her schedule.
  • The partner can also bond with the baby by helping out with feedings.
  • Baby does not need to be fed as frequently.
  • Easier to monitor the amount babies ingest.
  • The mother can consume alcohol and doesn't need to change her diet.

How do babies breath?

Breast Feeding

  • Many organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, World Health Organization all recommend breast feeding exclusively for the first six months - up to 12 months.

In preparation for breathing air, fetuses begin making surfactant while still in the womb. Babies that are born very prematurely often lack adequate surfactant and must receive surfactant replacement therapy immediately after birth in order to breathe.
