Dear Graduates,
Congratulations! You’ve finally made it! You no longer have to write a two-page answer to a one-sentence question that starts with “To what extent” and your Extended Essay is no longer your only long-term relationship. Well, at least for some of you. Ok, enough of my cold jokes.
Do you know that you are a very special generation? Raise your hand if you were born in 2003. Do you know that’s when the SARS pandemic started? You were born during the first pandemic of the 21st century! Now you are graduating during the 2nd pandemic of the 21st century. So, what’s the significance of this? Would this be the last pandemic in your life? Or would it be the new “normal”?
Graduates, I would like to take this opportunity to give you two words of advice: Courage and Creativity. Nelson Mandela once said, “Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
In the post-Covid world, you need to be courageous; to be risk-takers, to not be confined by the fear caused by this pandemic; to continue to pursue your dreams or like coming to this graduation. Now let’s talk about creativity. In one of Sir Ken Robinson’s TED talks, he mentioned a story that I really love telling. The story is about a little girl who was in a drawing lesson. She was six, and she was at the back, drawing, and the teacher said this girl hardly ever paid attention, and in this drawing lesson, she did. The teacher was fascinated. She went over to her, and she said, “What are you drawing?” And the girl said, “I’m drawing a picture of God.” And the teacher said, “But nobody knows what God looks like.” And the girl said, “They will in a minute.”
The takeaway from this story is that kids are not afraid to be wrong. Sir Ken Robinson is not saying that not being afraid to be wrong is equivalent to being creative. He’s saying that if you’re not courageous enough to be wrong as the little girl, then you won’t come up with anything new. Therefore, to be the future of this post-covid world, you need to be courageous and creative. With these two attributes, you will be able to pursue to make this world a better place. Thank you.
