The word 事件 (incident) I think is able to convey meaning in Japanese (or Chinese, or Korean), but doesn't really accurately convey much meaning in English. That said, not sure what a replacement might be. "Affair"?

A friend's son was admitted to RMC out of HS at around this time. On his first visit came back home a changed person, a heavy drinker w/ deep misogyny. I lamented & feared for what he had become. And then he was pushed out. Struggled academically, had no support. A brutal system.
