I'm playing in SOLO mode as I learn the game. I love most every aspect of this reboot of the classic so far. However, I've come across some questionable design choices. Most you learn to live with, such as the online connection and progress save, else you cannot play the game, it seems. I've seen this in the server downtimes when I've been been unable to play.
Today though, I encountered a very frustrating situation regarding the station docked condition. I just got through purchasing my first new ship, and had outfitted it with some upgrades. I selected LAUNCH from the hanger, but then paused the game in order to change a few keybindings. During what I thought was a traditional paused state as I reconfigured the controls, somehow my ship was blown up.
I had to repurchase my new ship and the upgrades using the insuarance option, leaving me in debt to some creditor. Given there is no manual save system, there is no way to recover the mistake. Now, a lot of these mechanics are not made very clear, such as that the game appears never to actually be paused, and so this was totally unexpected in Solo play. I expect for Open play this system is to prevent people hogging the launch pad.
That's understandable, but surely a system to automatically impound your ship and issue a fine like in most other infractions would be reasonable enough? How is blowing you up on the launch pad a reasonable way to deal with a delay in launching? Surely it's better just to return you to the hanger and issue a fine if they must?
I always exit to menu if im AFK for more than a few minutes
That's fair enough. I would to, I just didn't realise being in the game settings would be a akin to being AFK. Going to have to research if there are any such other rules, as I don't want to lose more ships like that!
"but then paused the game in order to change a few keybindings." -- I realised there is NO PAUSE when using the menu. I found out while I was supercruising and on purpose checked the ETA (like, 2.30 minutes) before going into the "pause" menu to set up a key binding. I was quick about it and when I got back into the game, the ETA was now 1.29 minutes (or some such) meaning I could have ended up running my ship into a planet.
"totally unexpected in Solo play. " -- agree.
Blowing up your ship was probably due to "no loitering" rule which still is a tad too much given the circumstances in Solo.
Lol, you were probably destroyed for loitering around the landing pad after you'd told the station you were leaving. The game mechanics are the same regardless of mode of play (solo, group, open). Think about what would happen if you got out your car & walked away just as you were halfway out the carpark ;-)
Easy mistake though, when you're used to the original game. You actually have more game time than me, even though i'm a KS backer. I've not got around to trying it out yet, other than checking out the controls. I do read the forums occasionally though.
It's best to make as many silly mistakes as possible while you're in the free sidewinder.
Indeed, I think we all agree I was caught with my pants down on the launchpad, so to speak! Now, I'm purposely going into the hanger on every docking, and then Save & Quit if I need to do something. Just in case...

The game is still not paused if you exit to the menu, unless you mean the main menu (logging off).
And to the origianl poster, I feel for you and agree that it should be possible to pause if you play in solo mode.
Many old 'backers' (people who funded the development of the game) are very upset at this, since earliler you could play in offline mode completely. Just before release it was announced that you needed to be online wether you played in multiplayer mode or solo mode, which kind of seems like a very bad way to pay back the people who sponsored them.
You really think we all just wait for you to come back :) All 400,000 of us :)
I don't think you read the posts properly. I said solo play, but also said why not have the dock remove your ship and impound it after the time limit expires.
Blowing it up for a misdemenour is a ridiculous punishment, which should only be reserved if you become a hostile threat, like opening fire in the station.
Give the space docks a tractor beam to deal with offenders by throwing them out and banning them from re-entering for 24 hours!
indeed :) Blowing up a ship would most likely cause damage to the facility and likely damage nearby ships, too. A warning would be OK, maybe getting dragged out and fined, too, but not destroying the ship like that.
while i understand what you're saying and dont disagree, i also dont think the current system has anything wrong with it, it sucks you didnt know, but now that you know, there is no problem, just stay in the hangar till you are done, and dont go AFK while inside a station or near the entrance. its easily avoidable, but certainly, in solo, it would be good if there could be a pause button.

Tractor beams don't exist and won't likely exist in the Elite universe, perhaps they could send a 'droid to drag you into an impound somewhere perhaps. One big reason to stop loitering has little really to do with crime and punishment (although that is woven in), rather more to do with preventing online players camping the docking area to prevent people from coming and going.
Solo play is the same as open without any form of match making with other players.
I like it and hope they don't change it. It is a design decision that is one of the better parts of the game. Its persitant, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
At least you know now not to launch and then look at menus. I usually launch, and then thrust up and away from the dock and zero my speed out if I need to do anything. Usually I set my next destination right from within the hanger and am ready to go though.

Now you've learnt this important lesson, I doubt you'll let it happen again.
Fine and towed away? I think having it crushed on site would be regarded as overkill in any country!

Also, Solo should have a proper pause function.
