Followers know I like to bring the receipts for important issues, so here's rough data for this year's cycle in relation to East Asian Studies job ads for language. Note the HUGE disparity in precarious non-tenure track jobs vs. TT, and how awful the US system is this regard.

I don't know that I've ever asked this (or looked into it), just commented on current job trends, but--why ARE language instructors almost always non-TT? What is the institutional justification for that and when did it start?
