Umayyads or Abbasids?
I decided to play a game as a Muslim "major", and I had a good game as the Umayyads going, but my hopes were crushed by the independence of a minor supported by Karl Karling of west and middle Francia. Should I start a new game as the Umayyads? Should I start a game as the Abbasid caliph?
Abbasids definitely start out stronger and with more options, but both the Abbasids and Umayyads face major challenges early in the game.
The Umayyad Charlemagne assisted rebellion seems to be a scripted event, so you have to be prepared for it.
Abbasids start out with some strong vassals with claims on the empire.
Umayyad are one of the largest starting groups to hold mostly different culture/religion lands. This makes for some interesting dynamics.
Abbasids are mostly just a big Muslim empire who if you can overcome the stability issues then it just becomes a game of manage and expand.
I know it is not a "major" but I actually enjoy playing the Berber tribes in west Africa. They are just different.
