Question:

There are 2 different types shown in the images. Is the outline of the face where it says Inch/on/off etc. black or chrome?

Answer:

Not too sure of your question. But it is a chrome frame with a LCD display. Basically different shades of gray. Which is very easy to read.

When I received this caliper, I was surprised at the heft, and the seemingly very solid build quality. I've looked at digital calipers before, but they all felt like toys. This one doesn't. Others here have talked in detail about the functions, etc. so I won't cover those in this review.

My primary concern was "is it accurate?"

I set out to test that in the best way that I could think of - by comparing it to an analog engineering caliper. I found that the Preciva measurements matched up well with my trusty Starrett analog caliper. Rather than go through the numbers, I'll let the photos speak for themselves.

The only downside that I found was that the analog scale wasn't mounted quite accurately enough to be used for fine measurements (off by 1/100" or so), but this is a digital caliper anyway. If you plan to use the analog scale to get "in the ballpark" and use the digital scale for the actual measurement, you'll LOVE this caliper.

The important thing to note about these calipers is that they are stout. They are mostly metal and not at all cheap feeling like similar models. TL:DR: Great calipers. Solidly built with big numbers*. Accurate and well built.

* Please note that the display does NOT have the same large numbers after tenths of an inch that the pictures in the the listing. The pictures showed giant digits all across. PLEASE change the pictures, because these are good otherwise.

Battery was dead on arrival - otherwise seems okay

Wasn't able to turn on the calipers out of the box. There were no instructions telling how to remove the battery. Don't try using using the phillips screwdriver that is provided. That's for something else I guess. I was able to remove the battery holder by prying open the battery cover located on the top of the display by using a small flat blade screwdriver (not provided). I removed the battery from its holder and tested using a reliable tester. Original battery was DOA. Did not bother using second battery that was provided. Assumed it was probably no better than the first. Replaced the original battery with a known good, fresh Duracell 2032. Was then able to turn on caliper with no issues. Everything seems to work okay. All functions work as described. Unit has Fraction mode which wasn't talked about much. Seems to work well. Unit seems to be a very good value. Would buy again if it continues to work like it does right now. Stay safe.

Overall this is a very accurate and well constructed digital caliper for the asking price. I'm not a machinist, but I do quite a bit of woodworking and for me the ability to read fractional measurements was a must!

Pros -
1. Digits are large and easy to read either in daylight or reasonably lit area
2. Caliper is made of stainless steel and feels substantial in the hand.
3. It's easy to change modes with the push of a button from fractional, to decimal to metric.
4. Caliper powers-off automatically if unused for a few mins and powers-on when motion is detected.
5. Last measuring mode is remembered upon next use.
6. Caliper automatically displays fractional measurements using the least common denominator.
7. For MY use, it is VERY accurate, but bear in mind I'm not working beyond 1/64" most of the time.

Cons - (listed major to minor)
1. I wish the display were backlit to make it easier to read under dimly-lit conditions.
2. The case is VERY cheap (thin) plastic and I expect the locking tabs will break within a year of use.
3. Obviously, this is NOT a top-tier caliper (Starrett/ Mitutoyo) and as such, there is a moderate amount of 'play' in the movement, but at this price-point this is to be expected.
4. I wish there were another option for woodworkers that had the vernier marked in fractions only!

Overall, given the price, I am VERY pleased thus far with this caliper and would buy it again in a heart-beat.

I could easily see the numbers without my glasses and I was able to operate it with one hand. You can also change units and go to fractions very quickly to verify your math. This project was the reason I bought it, always wanting a digital vernier. Good value (i.e., relatively inexpensive) and I like its hefty feel while still very easy to use. It also reads to four decimal points. I did register the caliper for its extended one year warranty. Hopefully I don't ned the warranty and the caliper continues to function correctly for years to come. At this point, an excellent product.

The package was decent. Included in the package is a digital caliper, user manual, a tiny screw driver for repair purposes, an extra battery, and an extension of warranty of 1 year, worth the value! This digital caliper is a pretty solid built, stainless steel, beats a lot of other brands out there. On the back is a metr-iso and a whitworth chart, which at times, come in handy. The caliper is measured to the hundredth and it is accurate! I was very pleased with accuracy. Overall, it is a very nice built and accurate caliper, I was happy with the purchase, and it was totally worth the value!!

It is nicely engineered and feels right in the hand. Slightly ‘left hand’ heavy but acceptably so.

OUTSIDE MEASURING JAWS: On holding it up the light, I can see that the machining is perfect. The gap, when virtually closed is absolutely even.

INSIDE MEASURING JAWS: This is always more difficult to check because you need to look through the gap at a slight angle. It does however appear that the gap is not perfectly even. It is less than a thousandth of an inch out, by my eye-ball, and perfectly acceptable for my needs. There is a very slight roughness to the measuring surface which probably accounts for this. The 'error' will soon be nullified by normal wear and tear, so it really is not of significance.

STEP MEASURING SURFACES: The calliper stands on end absolutely square - so the step surfaces are precisely made.

DEPTH MEASUREMENT: Absolutely flush with the jaws held closed - just as they should be. The slider is slightly wobbly in the body but that does not affect the accuracy. Better that way that stiff.

IN USE: The jaws can be held in place firmly with the thumb on the bulge under the display. Ergonomically, it is just right. The fine adjustment wheel is indeed a proper working wheel and not just a dummy plonked on there to make it look good. The locking screw works easily without having to apply too much pressure. Full marks then to Preciva for the design and engineering.

THE LCD DISPLAY: It’s big and clear but it does not work well in cold weather. Anyone expecting to regularly work in the cold would be better off with a Vernier calliper or a Dial calliper. The manual says 5°C to 40°C operating temperature and it was less than that when it was delivered so, fair enough, it didn’t work properly.

Whether you turn it off manually of leave it to turn itself off, it turns itself on again as soon as you move the jaws - which makes the on/off switch almost redundant. If you are travelling with one of these it may be a good idea to lock it with the top screw to stop it turning itself on all the time and flattening the battery. Remember not to close it right up though or you risk straining something. CR2032 batteries are pretty cheap and they give you a spare battery as well as the one fitted when it arrives. With a bit of care, battery life should not be an issue.

MY FIRST ONE WAS FAULTY: I noticed that when pressing the 'ZERO' button, the display always said '7.77' or ‘0.01’ instead of '0.00'. Measurements sometimes worked normally but in some lighting conditions it was all too easy to see the parts of the LCD that you should not be seeing - which makes reading it a bit worrying. Having realised that problem, I gradually opened up the jaws beyond my normal range and I noticed that there were a great number of random readings appearing. Far too many to be acceptable, so my first one had to go back. Fortunately, the replacement is a brilliant tool at a bargain price.

ACCURACY: To test the Preciva, I measured three drill-bits (5.00 mm, 2.50 mm, 1.20 mm) with 5 different devices. I measured each shaft three times with each of the 5 instruments - i.e. 15 measurements of each object. The table below shows the average result in millimetres. (The table may not survive re-formatting by Amazon so read carefully).

NOMINAL SIZE: 5.00 2.50 1.20
Vernier Micrometer: 4.957 2.508 1.200 These readings did not vary.
Vernier calliper: 5.02 2.54 1.26 These readings did not vary.
Plastic calliper: 4.70 2.30 1.10 Varied by 0.20 over three readings.
Faulty Preciva calliper: 4.94 2.49 1.18 Varied by 0.10 over three readings.
Second Preciva calliper: 4.96 2.50 1.19 Varied by 0.02 over three readings.

The micrometer readings and the Vernier calliper readings were absolutely consistent. The Faulty Preciva and the £5 plastic digital calliper varied with each reading but the Replacement Preciva varied only very slightly…

On the ‘5.0’ mm object it varied 0.02 mm
On the ‘2.5’ mm object it varied 0.01 mm.
On the ‘1.2’ mm object it varied 0.00 mm.

The measurement ‘error’, if error it really is (probably is), is a maximum of 0.01 mm. All of those results are pretty damn good for a budget calliper!

My Vernier micrometer reads '0.00' when closed right up, using the torque limiter. I would guess therefore that it is reliably accurate at these small measurements. On that assumption, the Preciva calliper is more accurate than the Vernier calliper(!) and it is of course much quicker to read than the Vernier calliper. Very rarely will I need anything more accurate than the Preciva and if I did, I would be using a micrometer anyway – so the Preciva is a bargain!

CONCLUSION: It is a shame about the faulty LCD on the first Perciva but the replacement one is a gem. Highly recommended and well worth 5 stars at that price.

The £5 plastic calliper result was interesting. It is the least accurate, as should be expected, but for most purposes, it is good enough. How often do you REALLY need to measure closer than 0.3 mm?

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PICTURES ARE OF THE FAULTY ONE. THE REPLACEMENT IS 'PERFECT'.

Ayant déjà un pied à coulisse à graduation, j'ai décidé de me procurer un numérique pour une lecture facile et précise.
J'ai reçu le pied à coulisse dans un boite bien emballée par le constructeur et Amazon.
Je l'utilise pour divers petits travaux, notamment en électronique et pour le PC.
Dans la boite il y a le pied à coulisse avec une pile à l'intérieur, une pile de rechange, un petit tournevis cruciforme pour le changement de la pile et un manuel multi-langue dont le français.

Il est un peu plus lourd qu'un pied classique à cause de l'électronique embarqué et de la pile, il reste néanmoins facile à manipuler.

Il est tout en aluminium sauf le boitier avec l'écran qui est en plastique, le tout est lisse et tiens bien en main.

First digital calliper and I’m most impressed.

I’ve just purchased a 3D printer and want to start creating my own objects to print. A digital calliper is an essential piece of equipment when measuring to create the CAD version of the objects for printing but I didn’t want to spend £100’s on a ‘pro’ level version.

I looked on amazon and after assessing the reviews I chose this one. It arrived promptly, well packaged and exactly as described. To my pleasant surprise it came in a plastic storage box to protect it and even had a spare CR2032 battery for when the one that’s already fitted runs out. The one standout feature I like is the large LCD display - an oldie like me can read it even when I’m not wearing my glasses!

I’m no expert on digital callipers but I performed some testing alongside a draughtsman’s ruler and can see that the measurements given by the calliper are at least visually correct.

For the price paid I’m very impressed so far but will update if my initial impression changes.

Tralascio la descrizione dell'oggetto e del contenuto della confezione, già ampiamente presenti in altre recensioni.
Riporto solo un paio di considerazioni:
1) Accuratezza della misura: l'ho testato su uno spessimetro di marca "Metrica", composto da 20 lamelle, da 0,05 mm ad 1 mm. Tutte le misure sono risultate coerenti e all'interno del margine d'errore dichiarato.
2) Ripetibilità della misura: anche in questo caso ho ottenuto risultati molto positivi, ottenendo lo stesso identico valore nella quasi totalità delle volte.
3) Accuratezza nella costruzione delle pinze, viste in controluce combaciano perfettamente, nessuna luce nel mezzo.

Speriamo mantenga tutte queste qualità nel tempo. Nel caso di variazioni, aggiornerò la recensione.
In definitiva lo consiglio senza remore.
