The Iowa Board of Regents has purchased 17 acres of land from the YMCA to be maintained as a natural area adjacent to property already owned by Iowa State University.

The regents approved the purchase of the land for $120,000. The area is adjacent to the Applied Science Center on the west and ISU’s Veenker Memorial Golf Course to the east.

Documents show the property is known as the Lynn Fuhrer Lodge. It was built at the end of World War I as a memorial of an ISU student and military pilot killed in the war.

The property, which contains a lodge and trails, needs repair and the YMCA no longer wanted to own the property, records show.

The Natural Heritage Foundatiton and Ames Parks and Recreation Department want to see the property maintained in its current wooded condition.

The university owns 175 acres of woodlands in the adjacent area and by buying the land, it connects to existing university property.

The University’s Division of Student Affairs may someday develop a student retreat center on the site.
