仕事中のジョンに電話をした時。
John is in the meeting.
と言われたら、ジョンはミーティングの最中。
John is at the meeting.
だったら、ジョンは社外のミーティングに出かけています。
休憩中に誰かに『ミーティング中なんだ』という時は、その瞬間は会議の最中ではないので I’m at the meeting.
文法的には in、at どちらでもOK！で、シチュエーションや話し手のイメージで in か at が決まるのが厄介なところです。
端的に言うと、
in: 空間。話し手が建物の中をイメージする時。何かの最中。国、都市、区、近所、部屋。
at: 点。何かの目的のためにそこに行ってるので、建物の中か外かはどうでもいい時。対面している状態。住所、特定の場所。
では、使い方を比較してみましょう♡

1. at the cafe / in the cafe
基本は at で、何か用事があってカフェにいるとき。 in は『店内にいる』と強調したい時にのみ使います。
She’s at the cafe.
彼女はカフェに行ってるよ。（中か外）
She’s in the cafe.
彼女はカフェの中にいるよ。
同じように使える場所の例
一般的な建物を表す単語のほとんど。冠詞の the がつきます。

2. meet at the bar / meet in the bar
待ち合わせの時は、会うことが目的なので at を使います。『建物の中で』と強調するときにのみ、in です。
Meet me at the bar.
バーで会おう。
Meet me in the bar.
バーの中で会おう。
3. in the conference room / at the conference room
会議室は部屋なので、in the kitchen と同じく in を使います。at のときは中ではなくて、入口付近にいる可能性が高いです。
She’s in the conference room.
彼女は会議室（の中）にいます。
She’s at the conference room.
彼女は会議室のすぐ近くにいます。
4. in the elevator / at the elevator
エレベーターも部屋と同じ扱いなので、中にいれば in です。at はエレベーター付近にいる時。
We are in the elevator.
エレベーターの中にいるよ。
We are at the elevator.
エレベーターのすぐ近くにいるよ。
5. arrive at / arrive in
arrive at と arrive in は同じ意味。続く名詞によって、at か in が決まります。
in: 国、都市、区、中にいると感じる場所
at: 特定の場所
He arrived at the airport.
彼は日本に着いた。
He arrived in NY.
彼はニューヨークに着いた。
稀に、at ＋ 都市名、at ＋ 区の名前になっているのは、都市名と駅名が同じ場合に、駅名を省略して都市名だけが残ったためです。
He arrived at Shinjuku (station).
彼は新宿（駅）に着いた。
日本語でも新宿駅や渋谷駅のことを、よく新宿、渋谷と言いますよね。
有名ではない区に対して、in の他に at も使われるケースもありますが、数は多くはありません。
arrive at だけを学校英語で習った方は要注意。
6. at the school / in the school
in school は就学中、at school は通っている学校で勉強、もしくは仕事をしていることを意味します。
She’s in school.
彼女は就学中です。
She’s at school.
彼女は学校に行っているよ。
theを使うのは、別の学校を訪れているとき。
She’s at the school.
彼女は用事があって、その学校に行っているよ。
建物の中にいることを強調したいときは、in です。
She’s in the school.
彼女はその学校の中にいます。

7. in the hospital / at the hospital / in hospital
アメリカ英語で、in the hospital は入院中を意味します。
Betty is in the hospital.
ベティは入院中です。
＊イギリス英語では、冠詞 the を取って、in hospital が入院中になります。
病院で働いていたり、お見舞いで訪れていたら at 。
Betty is at the hospital.
ベティは病院に行っています。
8. in prison / in the prison / at the prison
服役中を表す場合は冠詞をつけません。
He’s in prison.
彼は服役中です。
訪問者か、刑務所で働いている方が、刑務所を訪れているときは、冠詞の a / the をつけます。
He’s in the prison.
彼は刑務所の中にいます。
He’s at the prison.
彼は刑務所に行っています。（刑務所の中か外）
9. at church / in church / at the church / in the church
冠詞がないときは礼拝中、もしくは通っている教会の意味があります。冠詞があるときは、建物としての教会。
I’m at church.
礼拝に行っています。いつもの教会にいます。（中か外）
I’m in church.
礼拝の最中です。いつもの教会の中にいます。
I’m at the church.
（いつものではない）教会に来ています。（中か外）
I’m in the church.
（いつものではない）教会の中にいます。
10. at the bed / in bed / in the bed
ベッドのそばにいる時、ベッドに寝ている状態、ただベッドの中にいるとき。
I’m at the bed.
ベッドの側にいます。
I’m in bed.
ベッドに寝ています。
I’m in the bed.
ベッドの中にいます。

冠詞 a に関しては the の方が使用頻度の高いもの、いつも the で使うものは the で表記しています。
学校で in hospital: 入院中と習っていたのに、アメリカで in the hospital と書いていたのをよく見かけていた時は、アメリカの人はそれほど the の有る無しは気にしないのかと思っていました(><)
in hospital がイギリス英語で in the hospital がアメリカ英語だと知ったときは『やっぱり冠詞には敏感なんだ！』ってすっごい納得〜！
