i NEVER want to hear 'how will be pay for it' about helping our citizens instead of plowing wasted dollars into the military

It's certainly never going to replace the (reliable and cheap) F-16. Maybe we should just buy a bunch of Typhoons.

It would be more cost effective to shoot dollar bills out of a canon than pitch the F-35 into battle. theguardian.com/technology/201?

then they spend enough money to hand deliver every person in the US 5 thousand dollars.
Every single adult - over 300 million people
The US government is broken.

I wonder if it's possible to retrofit F-15 or F-16 frames with new "guts" and a stealth skin?
Don't hammer me on this, I'm just thinking with my fingers.

It's even bigger than that. The push is to make warfare "autonomous", every piece of weaponry is integrated into a larger data sharing system: radars, ground-air batteries, logistics command, etc. There is crap load of electronics integration going on. F-35 is just one piece of it

The F-22 WORKS, so we cancelled it. The A-10 WORKS. So we cancelled it.
The F-15,F-16,Fa-18 all WORK.
They were cancelled , then revived.
Ike warned about the "Military Industrial Complex"( stupidity for hire) in 1960.
Is ANYONE paying attention?

It didn’t fail, it succeeded since the entire point wasn’t to build a plane but to create a jobs program and appease constituents of those who kept supporting it even when it was clearly a boondoggle.

You missed an even bigger aim - make Lockheed billions of $ so they could spend millions on politicians who will then approve the next batch of billions for Lockheed.

This is literally a TRILLION dollar mistake. Anyone who wants to treat the DOD budget as some kind of sacred cow is insane. It's full of this type of incompetence and waste annually. Eff that.

For most missions, the Air Force could use a slightly jacked up trainer with smart weapons. Every fighter doesn't need to be suitable for fighting WW3 against the Chinese and Russians.

They’ve been saying since at least 2015 that the plane wasn’t good.

Wasn't that a misleading article? It was a fully outfitted F35 vs a lightly equipped F16. This test wasn't designed to be passed in conventional way but to test how agile it can be even in worst case scenarios.

Layer upon layer upon layer upon layer of technology.
I could see that more than 5 years ago when I was directly involved with some of the technology they used.
The F-35 was never going to 'get off the ground'.
So much wasted taxpayer money.

Hmmm, trying to remember the last time that multi-service, multi-role aircraft ever worked out like planned. Maybe the best example was the F-4 but it didn't get a gun until it kept getting ass-blasted by MiGs in Vietnam. Specialized aircraft like the A-10, have fared much better

I think some of this is a bit misleading compared to the general’s comments. The “Ferrari” point refers to higher-than-planned usage of F-35s and engine wear. Delays have meant there aren’t enough F-35s to do everything asked of them currently.

Its almost as if they weren't designed to be used.

The beauty of the military industrial complex is that everything it produces is obsolescent the day it leaves the factory. Nice self-own, America.

But even a stone axe is a weapon, it matters not, how old a weapon is. The USA is fifty years ahead at all times anyhow. Own that.
