FEATURES

Fukiage beach

Fukiage beach

One of Japan's three largest dunes, the northernmost sand dune extends 47 km from Ichikikushikino to Hioki and Minami Satsuma. It faces the East China Sea and occupies the northern half of the Minami Satsuma coastline. Every May, the “Fukiage Beach Sand Festival” is held to delight visitors coming from inside and outside the prefecture.

Manosegawa

Manosegawa

The shallow tidal flats spread out at the mouth of the Manose River in Fukiage Beach, where you can see the population and wild birds of Hamabow, a natural monument. Many migratory birds fly in winter, and the “birds dance” seen from Sunset Bridge is spectacular.

Rias coast

Rias coast

Minami Satsuma has a beautiful Kuroshio-washed Rias coast for more than 50 km. There are many mountains approaching the sea, and the rugged coastline is dotted with quirky reefs. Enjoy this spectacular view by kayaking along the coastline or cycling along the coastal road.

Bounotsu

Bounotsu

Bounotsu, once prospered as Sanshin in Japan, has been a major maritime transportation site since ancient times, and in the Nara era it was where Jian Zhen landed. Prospered as a trading base for Mr. Shimazu since the Middle Ages, and the townscape still shows the atmosphere of the time.

A land full of ancient romance

There are many places where mythological romance abounds, such as the Kurose Coast, where the great-grandchild Niniginomikoto landed, and the Kasasamiya shrine, which is said to have been married and lived with Konohana Sakuyahime. In addition, there are many archeological sites from the early days of the Jomon period to the late period, including the Kakunohara archeological site, which is a nationally designated historic site, and is full of ancient romance.

Seta samurai gate

Kaseda samurai gate

In Kaseda, which prospered as the outer castle of the Satsuma Domain, the home of a priest who was more than 100 years old still remains. Along the waterway, you can see the beautiful cityscape of Ishigaki and Samurai Gate.
