Work to transform the former Veterans Memorial Elementary School building into the Veterans Memorial Community Center is continuing as scheduled.
“The work is right on pace, but there’s no expedited schedule,” said Richard Waldo, deputy director for the department of public works.
The costly replacement of a faulty steam heating system with a new hot water system is still underway, with a possible completion date in late December or early January, Waldo said.
A general clean-up and minor remodel will follow before new tenants are able to move into the building in late January or early February, he said.
The former elementary school is slated to house Provincetown’s recreation department, council on aging, and department of public works administrative offices.
In December, a significant leak in the steam heating system forced the premature evacuation of the pre-kindergarten program, Wee Care day care program, and superintendent’s office from the building to the high school building. Kindergarten classes were already consolidated into the Provincetown High School building at the beginning of last school year to make way for the building’s transition.
Technical engineers were also on site last week to do preliminary work connecting the building to the OpenCape broadband network.
The VMCC facility, which also will serve as the town’s emergency shelter, is one of Provincetown’s three designated anchor buildings to receive the reliable, high-speed service along with Town Hall and the Provincetown Public Library.
The OpenCape project is also scheduled for completion in early January.
