U.S. Congressman Madison Cawthorn (R-District 11) is just days into his new role. But, the 25-year-old, who is the youngest serving congressman in modern history, has found himself embroiled in controversy for participating in the pro-Trump rally that preceded the chaos at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

Cawthorn, of Hendersonville, used Twitter to encourage supporters to attend the rally. Cawthorn spoke at the event and congratulated the gatherers as he came onstage.

“This crowd has some fight in it,” Cawthorn said. “And I am so thankful for each and every one of you.”

Hours later, at the urging of President Donald Trump, supporters moved to the Capitol, and many bullied their way inside.

But, despite his tweets urging “millions of patriotic Americans stand for their country,” Cawthorn said he felt no culpability in what unfolded Wednesday afternoon.

“I don't feel I had any responsibility for them attacking the Capitol,” Cawthorn said. “It was despicable. They are thugs.”

One tweet showed a photo of Cawthorn with the hashtag #stopthesteal, referencing false allegations the presidential election wasn’t fairly executed.

The tweet stated, “The fate of a nation comes down to the events of tomorrow. This New Republican Party will not back down.”

Cawthorn said he repeatedly tweeted against violence, saying his efforts would be to argue his allegations on the House floor, which he did once the Capitol was deemed safe for legislators to re-enter.

As for his alignment with Trump, Cawthorn said he thought Trump went too far in his words before Wednesday’s violence.

“I do believe that saying we needed to march down to the Capitol was a mistake on behalf of the president. Any of my supporters who are thinking about trying to take democracy in their own hands and storm the Capitol again, I have to say they do not support the same type of politics I support,” Cawthorn said.

Ultimately, the electoral votes were certified.

“It appears Joe Biden is going to be the president, and I will support the office of the presidency," Cawthorn said.

Haywood County Health and Human Services said Friday, Jan. 8, it is nearing completion of Phase 1a for the county's COVID-19 vaccine distribution.

The county surpassed 1,000 successful vaccinations last week, through either Haywood County Health and Human Services or Haywood Regional Medical Center.

“We had a very successful first week of vaccinations at the health department and look forward to moving into even greater distribution of vaccine as more becomes available,” said Garron Bradish, HCHHS interim health director.

Last week, employees of area doctor’s offices, dental offices, pharmacies and funeral homes were vaccinated at Health and Human Services.

“It is important to vaccinate these front-line workers as early as possible since they may potentially be used in the future to administer the vaccine to the general public," Bradish said.

COVID VACCINE PRE-REGISTRATION OPENING THIS WEEK FOR HAYWOOD CO. RESIDENTS OVER 75

As those in Phase 1a are vaccinated, the county looks towards Phase 1b, which it expects to begin later this week.

"The next phase will focus on the citizens in the age groups that are the most susceptible and who have suffered the severest illnesses -- those over age 75," Bradish said.

Beginning Monday, Jan. 11, those residents over the age of 75 that pre-registered will begin getting phone calls and text messages with scheduling information for their vaccine appointments, which will begin later in the week.

Haywood County Health and Human Services will be partnering with Haywood Regional Medical Center on a series of vaccine clinics that will greatly expand the county’s capacity for vaccine distribution.

These clinics will serve those on the pre-registry list who have been contacted with an appointment time, and will NOT be open to the public or to walk-ins. Instructions on how to participate will be given when appointment times are scheduled.

NC COVID-19 UPDATE: OVER 7,500 VIRUS-RELATED DEATHS REPORTED; HOSPITALIZATIONS DOWN

As of now, all available doses have been allotted to the specific groups whose vaccine appointments have already occurred or are scheduled to happen next week. As more doses become available, vaccination providers will continue to work down the priority list in the order determined by the CDC.

The pre-registration process will remain the same for each group, and advance notice of when to begin registering will be given as we work through the available vaccine doses.

Those who fall into the Phase 1b category can make their appointment by visiting https://covid19.ncdhhs.gov/vaccines.

Haywood County HHS will continue to provide updates and advance notice to make sure everyone who wants to be vaccinated will have their chance.

Haywood County listed what it called "key points" about the COVID-19 vaccine:

  • The vaccine is tested, safe, and effective.
  • You cannot get COVID-19 from the vaccine.
  • There will be limited availability at first and more widely available over time.
  • The vaccine will be provided free of charge to everyone that wants it.
  • Two doses are needed for maximum immunity.
  • There is no vaccine mandate.
  • Continuing the 3Ws will be critical until the vaccine is widely taken.
