Fifth-day meeting of Eighth WPK Congress held

The fifth-day meeting of the Eighth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea took place on Saturday.

When Kim Jong Un, chairman of the WPK, chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK and supreme commander of the armed forces of the DPRK, appeared at the venue of the congress, all the participants greeted him with enthusiastic cheers.

The congress continued its work amid the growing political enthusiasm of participants, inspired by the clear-cut policy of struggle and progress.Serious discussions were made on the first agenda item "Review on the Work of the WPK Central Committee".

Speeches were made by Ko In Ho, Choe Sang Gon, Pak Hun, Kang Hyong Bong, Ri Song Hak, Ri Kyong Il, Jong Chang Ik, So Chong Hak, Kim Kwang Nam, Yang Yong Gil, Kim Son Yong and Jang Hyok.

Speakers expressed full support to the report on the work of the Party Central Committee which indicated the orientation of advance and fighting goals for the Korean revolution, admitting that it is a great practical programme surely guaranteeing a fresh leap forward and victory of socialist construction in the present stage.

Consequences of global warming sound alarm

In the beginning of last year the World Meteorological Organization warned about the real threat of global warming. Facts clearly proved the WMO’s warning was not exaggerating the situation. Last year was one of the hottest years since meteorological observation.

The average temperature between January and October last year was about 1.2 degrees centigrade higher than the one between 1850 and 1900. In late January a heat wave hit the coldest Antarctica for the first time in history, with the highest temperature rising up to 9.2. In early February an 18.3 degrees Celsius temperature was observed at a scientific research base in Antarctica.

Cuban president underlines need to intensify anti-pandemic work 

Cuban President Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez said in a recent meeting that the reduction of overseas travellers is the most effective way of preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Saying that Cuba is capable of curbing the spread of the malignant disease, he called on relevant organs to make endeavours to find out an effective way of inhibiting the extension of the infectious disease.

WPK audit report delivered

There was a report on the second agenda item "Review on the Work of the Central Auditing Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea" at the fifth-day sitting of the Eighth Congress of the WPK on Saturday.

According to the report, a correct viewpoint and attitude to Party financial management were established among Party organizations at all levels and Party officials, and big successes were made in drawing up the Party’s financial budget and implementing it.

Party rules revised at Eighth Congress of WPK

The Eighth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea discussed the third agenda item "On amendments to the rules of the WPK" at its fifth-day session on Saturday.

The Party Central Committee modified and supplemented some contents of the Party Rules in line with the development and principle of Party work to meet the requirements of the developing revolution and according to the new fighting tasks facing the Party, before referring them to the Eighth Congress of the WPK for discussion.

Local hospital promotes folk health

The South Phyongan Provincial People’s Hospital was inaugurated on January 10 1947, about one and a half years after Korea’s liberation from Japanese military rule.

The hospital with a total floor space of 37 000 square metres consists of wards for outpatients, inpatients and operation, an auxiliary building and dispensary.

Chemical factory goes into operation in Uzbekistan

A new chemical plant has started operating in Uzbekistan.

The annual production capacity of the ammonia and urea producer will reportedly be hundreds of thousands of tons respectively.

Power plants boost output

Power plants across the country overfulfilled their daily production plans by 2 percent on average in the first week of this year.

Thermal power plants raised power output by 6 percent and such hydropower stations as Suphung and Wiwon exceeded their targets for the first week by 37.4 and 60 percent respectively.

China bans poultry import from France

China imposed a ban on the import of poultry and relevant products from France on January 5. The measure was taken following the recent occurrence of highly pathogenic bird flu in France.

The customs administration and the ministry of agriculture and rural community of China issued a public announcement, calling on relevant institutions to do well quarantine, anti-epidemic and control work through close cooperation.

Heroic midwife heroine dedicated to obstetrics and gynaecology

Choe Jong Sim, lecturer at the obstetrical and gynaecological department of Pyongyang Continuous Medical Education College, is called by people as a midwife heroine.

During her decades-long career, she has helped more than 80 000 pregnant women at childbirth and saved hundreds of serious cases from the jaws of death by donating thousands of grams of her blood.
