You can syncretise Hinduism with animistic religions but Taoism is a well defined religion and they have a hereditary succession like Muslims had caliphs. Taoists loathe Buddhists and always tried to keep them down. You cannot follow both religions without being a heretic.

Hans used to follow both Mahayana and Vajrayana schools, both got persecuted but only the former ones could resurge back. Deities like Ganesha had presence in China until the practise was virtually wiped out by emperor Wuzong.
