I've been trying to install LInux Mint 9 LXDE on my parents' Compaq Evo D300 desktop. First, I used my netbook with Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition to create a bootable USB drive. Then, I tried to boot it on the desktop, but it nothing happens at all. I tried changing the boot order from the BIOS, but nothing. Then I tried making the bootable USB from the desktop itself. Then it started giving the the "invalid boot.ini" message, then goes back to booting from the hard drive. Then, I tried creating it on the hard drive (I was using Unetbootin by the way). The Live version worked. But when I tried to install it, no partition would come out. So I went back to Windows and tried formatting the USB to FAT32, then this time, I used Universal USB Installer to create the bootable USB. Guess what? "invalid boot.ini". Can anyone please help? The only other thing I could think of is to create it on a CD, but since our other desktop is broken and is currently in repair, and the Compaq one doesn't have a CD burner, I really only have the bootable USB option.
Oh, and no, I haven't used Mint4win. It looks like you're gonna have a dual boot if you use that, but I just want to erase Windows XP Professional completely and use Linux Mint.
I keep getting "invalid boot.ini"!

boot.ini is a windows-file. UNetbootin should be work. Use older Mintronsahagun wrote: I used Universal USB Installer to create the bootable USB. Guess what? "invalid boot.ini". Can anyone please help? The only other thing I could think of is to create it

Never mind, I just went to my friend's place this morning and burned me a CD copy of Linux Mint 9, as well as Xubuntu 10.04. And now, I'm using Mint 9 as I type this. It IS fast.
