Japanese castle designs have varied across time. We’ll mostly be discussing castles from Sengoku Jedai, a period of infighting between warlords. •Chashi •Yamajiro •Castles from Sengoku Jedai •Edo period castles

Construction Material Japanese castles mostly used wood for buildings such as the main Keep while stones were used for the walls without the use of mortar. Indian Forts were made of stone and bricks. Woodwork as fortification was rare in most regions.

The reason for the Japanese using wood was simple. It was easily available and importantly was more resistant to earthquakes especially as the Japanese had developed sophisticated construction techniques so that even large keeps could be stable.

This wasn’t much of a problem as siege weapons were relatively rare and were usually not employed on the castle itself. Lacquering and plastering the castle walls helped waterproof and fireproof the walls. Despite this castle, keeps were often destroyed by fires.

Indian palaces are mostly made out of stone and brick due to availability and durability. Local artisans were extremely artistic with stone carvings in the palaces.

Walls Walls of Japanese castles consisted of stone bases topped by wooden palisades which had arrow slits in them. There were no ramparts as the palisades gave enough protective position for firing.

Although some discussion of differences in walls will be made later, its enough to say south Asian fort builders had a love for crenellations where soldiers could fire from protected positions. They are found in most fort ramparts with arrow slits in them.

The design of these crenellations is the single most defining feature of the Indian fort for me. From Mughal forts to Rajput ones to those built by Marathas and local rulers.

Stone bases of Japanese forts While walls of Indian Forts were made of large stoned walled by mortar, Japanese stone bases for their walls and keeps are a completely different subject. The construction of these walls is unique and provides extra strength.

Unlike their European and Indian counterparts, Japanese castles were much different. These walls were built by certain guilds. Rather than using rectangular blocks of stone, the stones are irregularly cut with smaller stones filling any gaps.

This meant that there are greater contact surfaces and so the walls are stronger while still allowing stones to move a little making them less prone to damage from earthquakes. Their curvature makes them more stable as bases for buildings on top.

This curve was extremely carefully calculated and great attention was paid on the corners of these walls. At the same time, these walls are smooth enough to make climbing them a hard job. And even though the stones are irregular in shape, horizontal lines run across the wall.

Instead of mortar or cement, the very weight of the upper stones would give the wall its strength. This design makes the wall stronger than a brick and mortar wall.

General Layout and design Typically Indian forts had one or more walls surrounding the main buildings such as the palace. Water tanks, wells, or step wells were essential for adequate water supply. Natural features such as streams, hills would be used to add to the fort defenses.

Japanese forts were more complex and attempted to have a maze-like structure to make the main keep harder to access. This was achieved through multiple moats, sharp turns, “terraces” and many many gates.
