Election office in Sarpy County now looking for missing ballots
Some Gretna voters wonder why they never received their absentee ballots.
Voter Alison Tickner requested ballots for her and her husband a month ago.
"When I called today, they verified my ballot and my husband's ballot was mailed on October 1st," Tickner said.
The Tickner's live in precinct 46 and at least 50 voters on the mail route did not receive their ballots. Tickner thinks someone targeted her neighborhood.
"You think that stuff happens in Washington, not Gretna, Nebraska. But it did," Tickner said.
With early voters showing up in record numbers in Sarpy County, the election commissioner wants the process to go smoothly. The number of voters has nearly doubled from the last midterm elections.
"You never want to hear that someone didn't receive the ballot you sent out," said Michelle Andahl, Sarpy County election commissioner.
The Sarpy County elections office tracks each ballot with a unique bar code for an individual voter.
'We are able to track that we got the request and that it was mailed and it did leave our building and go to the correct mailing address and information for the voter," Andahl said.
Elections officials found a disconnect with the post office.
"The voters are not receiving them in their mailboxes," Andahl said.
Andahl said they are working closely with the Gretna post office.
"The Postal Service is committed to being a partner in the execution of elections via absentee voting for the State of Nebraska including four counties that are participating in an entire vote-by-mail process next month. We are working with Sarpy County election officials to identify any ballots that may not have been delivered in Gretna," Stacy St. John with the U.S. Postal Service said.
Andahl said voters will have to sign an affadavit voiding the first ballot, before receiving a new one. She doesn't believe there will be any voter fraud because the original ballots have all been canceled.
She even visited some disabled voters in their home with the proper paperwork, because they are not able to make it to the elections office to vote.
"I really hope this gives the election office and the Postal Service the ability to look at the process and make sure the right controls are in place," Tickner said.
The last day to request a ballot by mail is Friday.
