We found male sterility of sugi (<i>Cryptomeria japonica</i> D. DON) trees located in to Goto district of Toyama Prefecture. Sugi normally grows male and female flowers as well as produces seeds. The seeds usually have normal germination ability. By observation, both male and female flowers appeared to be almost normal. However, no pollen grains were dispersed from the male flowers in the pollination season from February through April in this particular sugi specimen. The inside structures of the male flowers appeared to be quite different from the normal flowers under an scanning electrion microscope. We observed no mature pollen grains in the pollen sacs of the male flowers collected before and during the pollination season. The lack of normal growth of the sporogenous tissue is suggested to be one of the causes of this male sterility.
