Who would've known, that the two better selling NFS games by Ghost were the ones that had an actual direction
Seriously, idk what happened with Payback. Such a bland and directionless game. Probably why sales lacked so hard.
The customization was and still is fucking excellent, could be more although....
That's it. The story is mediocre to say the least, the handling is still a shit attempt at making an inherently completely fucking garbage handling model tolerable instead of scrapping it all together and, as bad as NFS15' characters were with the constant sips Monster™ Energy Drink moments, NFSPB manages to be wholly worse in practically every way imaginable.

You can never go wrong with a Hot Pursuit or Underground "style" title. They're the bread and butter of this franchise.

Don't forget the early branding art we found for Payback, along with the "Hashtag" concept art as well. The game clearly had a good vision at the start, but it changed...somehow...
Take that EA! Put a slot machine in our engines again, I dare you.
Hopefully, they'll think twice next time! Lol
The real suprise with this leak is that FIFA 16, 17 and 18 are in the top 10 which sort of makes sense given any store making video game bundles usually includes a FIFA game but still it seems slot machines may not be an instant turn off

Using data from a recent PlayStation leak we now can get close to finding the actual number of players for Ghost Need for Speed games. The following calculation is used by the site, and outlined here: http://gamstat.com/how
Errors in this data is around 1%.
Unfortunately, Rivals was not catalogued at the time, but we're hard at work on Discord (thanks to /u/ConverseFox and /u/Sage_Ages) as we speak to find the sales value for the game. Using the site's own calculation method, we have found it to be:
Somewhere between 7,421,458 and 7,955,000 units.
Update 1: We have calculated a third estimate of 7,503,107. Average so far = 7.6 million
Will update this comment as needed. Regardless, the number presented in the graphic above is close to being accurate.
P.S. Here's a thread which dives deep into the technicalities of this stuff (since I know some folks are into that sort of thing): https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/a6ssfu/sony_accidentally_disclosed_the_number_of_players/
Keeping in mind that this is PS4 only data, we can safely round these values up and still have conservative estimates. Therefore, the following assumptions are pretty safe to make:
The reboot did a staggeringly well job. Not only was it clearly a spectacular success, but it even seems to have captured sales similar to NFS games in the past. It seems that "disdain" towards this title has been blown out of proportion.
An identical story can be said for Rivals which has sold similarly to its predecessor HP2010.
Payback, on the other hand, does have a noticeable...drop, even when compared solely to NFS2015. It's clear that loot boxes had a negative impact on this title.
Moral of the story, the Need for Speed brand definitely is strong enough to pull in numbers by itself, but the best selling games have passion put into them...
"the Need for Speed brand definitely is strong enough to pull numbers by itself"
Not for long if Ghost will keep making poor games like Payback to satisfy E.A demands and not their player base. There are far better games out there that do community service way better that Ghost studios. Passion and dedication is not a request anymore, it's a must. Or Ghost better get ready to be shut down, according to E.A history.
How many games are leaked? I mean I have tried searching a few games but they're all not found.
Wow NFS 2015's sales can stand toe to toe with AAA first person shooters ( even surpassing games like Destiny 2!) I didn't expected that.
You should also remember that earlier games were in the store for a much longer time. And with all the costnant deals and many bundles it makes sense they would sell way more than Payback. The more relevant would be stats about sales in the first year, and I think Payback numbers would be somewhat on par with Rivals.
But then it comes the factor of new gamers coming in the gaming industry and people who would've bough 2015 are like "payback is the newest one, i'll get that instead" type of thing...
This proves that payback was never better than 2015. End of discussion
This speaks volumes, hopefully they take these numbers into consideration for the future but I doubt it.
Apparently nfs2019 is closer to 2015 so that's something at least
Agreed. It has its flaws, but I really enjoy the high speed driving and good soundtrack.
Yes - even games that overlap PS3 would have separate trophy lists even if they were the same name so Rivals numbers don’t include the PS3 version
The 2015 blew the doors away at that time. After skipping 2014 release, the fans were itching for a new NFS. And when it unveiled on E3, fans starting to hype "Is this the Underground 3 we're really waiting for?".
The vibe and the gritty, underground feeling catches on the 2015. Also the transition between live action and game footage were seamlessly done. I dropped my jaw when the white BRZ Travis is walking around is actually your car and suddenly you got control of it like nothing happened.
The criticisms at that time were only lack of daytime, always online (Why you still have to be online when you want to play it alone?), lousy cops, No Parts Available when announcing the craziest customization available and handling model. But hey it's still better comparable to Gacha nature of Payback.
Rivals was THE ONLY racing games on PS4 at that time. Driveclub and The Crew was just a trailer and Gran Turismo just released GT6 on PS3. If you had PS4 at launch day and you like racing, then NFS Rivals was the only option available until a year later Driveclub was released.
Payback is meh, the fans either jumped ship into another platform (* cough FH3 cough *) or the game itself was riddled with poor development choices.
Sadly i kinda doubt they will put any effort but only time will show . Look at at numbers with each new nfs title their sales are going downhill fast . The only way i think which can save them from destroying the franchise is listening to the community and might have a chance but till then i dunno :/ . As i said only time will show their future
Payback must be the Undercover of this generation of NFS
I think undercover was great as who someone played for the first time but other then that its pretty bland
The actual number is somewhere between 7,421,458 and 7,955,000. If we get more data we can figure out a more accurate number.
since we have a third datapoint "7,503,107" we can assume its closer to the lower number than it is the higher
GHOST tried everything, i think its time to a RIVALS succesor.
Which one would you guys suggest playing of these three? I would like to get back in the franchise but after Most Wanted 2005 and Carbon I couldn't find any that caught me that much as those two.
I mean none of the post-modern titles really offer anything like MW2005 or Carbon. Rivals is Hot Pursuit style, 2015 Underground style, and Payback...well it does its own action-movie thing.
Basically, if you want classic illicit street racing and customization, 2015 is for you (but has an atrocious handling model), and if you want high-intensity cop action, then you have Rivals (but no visual customization).
Admittedly none of these games will capture the feel you want, unfortunately.
2015 and payback share some elements with carbon and most wanted.
I want a NFS game set in a different country, like Japan, or Germany or Even UAE
I really should play rivals again. I got it for PC so my game is basically starting over because I had it on PS4 before. Good game. Beat it it like 2 days on PS4. It wasn't even my game when I beat it haha. Beat it for a friend cuz he sucked at it and he just let me borrow his PS4.
Just cutting to the chase here and a little off topic, but still NFS(2015) related. Ever since day one release, have all or any of the patches that have been made to the game make getting either the game for $5 for the standard version of the deluxe edition for $6+ worth getting?
Players, not sales. 1 sold copy can be played by tens of people, borrowed to friends, played on other accounts on same PS4, sold as used and someone else bought it etc..
Loved the car combat in Rivals–still my favorite out of the 3 by far.
I'm surprised rivals loses in sales to NFS 15, seeing as how it was available on 5 platforms; Xbox 360, Xbox 1, PS3, PS4, and PC. NFS 15 was only available on PS4, Xbox 1, PC.
These numbers are bullshit. There's no way in hell NFS sold 10 mil on 1 platform alone.
I would be suprised if it made to 10 mil on all 3 platforms.
I also believe it's not the sales numbers. It is merely number of players, meaning that they include secondhand used PS4 sales. The actual sales numbers are surely below the playercount.
