Hakuba, at the base of the Japanese Alps

Hakuba Valley is at the heart of the spectacular Japanese Alps. With the national treasure of

Matsumoto Castle as its symbol, Matsumoto City is known as the gateway to the Northern Alps. It is a beautiful castle town with views of Kamikochi, the peaks of the Northern Alps and the Utsukushigahara Plateau. It is not only rich in nature and tourism spots, but also an area that has traditionally emphasized education and fostered a distinctive climate of art and culture.

The food and nightlife is oh so good!

The Hakuba Valley is spread across a few main areas or little “hubs” (Happo Town, Wadano, Echo Land, Goryu, Hakuba Town) and are all easily accessible by shuttle bus. Most hotels offer a complimentary shuttle service to the closest ski area. There is a free shuttle service between the many Hakuba Valley Resorts and Hakuba Town. A public bus service runs through the valley as well as a night shuttle bus, through Hakuba Village, giving access to shops, restaurants and bars.

Start monkeying about..

Jigokudani Monkey Park s located in the valley of the Yokoyu-River, in the northern part of the prefecture. The name Jigokudani, meaning "Hell's Valley", is due to the steam and boiling water that bubbles out of small crevices in the frozen ground, surrounded by steep cliffs and formidably cold and hostile forests.

It is famous for its large population of wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), more commonly referred to as snow monkeys, that go to the valley during the winter, foraging elsewhere in the national park during the warmer months. The monkeys descend from the steep cliffs and forest to sit in the warm waters of the onsen (hot springs), and return to the security of the forests in the evenings.

After a hard days Skiing, relax in a traditional onsen (spa)

After a hard day of skiing, a soak in a traditional Japanese Onsen is the perfect way to erase aches and pains. An onsen (温泉) is a term for hot springs in the Japanese language, though the term is often used to describe the bathing facilities and inns around the hot springs. Japan has thousands of onsen scattered along its length and breadth and today play a central role in directing Japanese tourism.

Red Door Lodge patrons have access to a private onsen with a free shuttle to and from the spa.

There are some unique rules with bathing in an onsen, we can organise your spa 7 days a week.
