Local News in Brief : Conversion of School Approved

Torrance will install two children’s play areas and replace asphalt with grass as part of a plan to convert the closed Greenwood Elementary School into a park.

The City Council voted 7 to 0 to make the changes on the 2.5-acre property, bounded by Fern Avenue, Sonoma Street, Greenwood Avenue and El Dorado Street. The first phase of the work will cost $130,000.

Greenwood School closed in 1984 and was purchased by the city in 1986.

The school’s bungalows will be used as temporary quarters for a senior citizen’s center and for meetings of other community groups. A large grass field will also remain intact.
