The Ardsley schools chief announced she is retiring this summer, ahead of the end of her contract that was renewed last year.

Lauren Allan, superintendent of the Ardsley Union Free School District, is retiring at the end of the 2017-18 school year.

Lauren Allan, an alumna of the school system, has worked with the Ardsley Union Free School District as an administrator for 15 years. Her departure comes about four years ahead of the end of her contract, a $270,000 annual salary approved by the school board in June through 2022.

When asked why she was leaving the position before the end of the contract, Allan joked, "I'm old and tired!"

She added: "No, but it's an exhausting job for sure, it's just time for Chapter 2."

Allan, who will stay on until the end of this school year, said she may consider consulting or working in higher education later.

Matthew Bonney, president of the Ardsley school board, thanked Allan for her leadership over the years.

"Because of her leadership, we have made great progress and look forward to the remainder of the current school year, and the year ahead," he said in the email.

Bonney also said the district will dedicate a space on its website for the new superintendent search where the community will be asked for input about a successor.

"It is a great district and very supportive community and board of education with a very experienced and smart staff," Allan said.
