I chose the Holy Cross Tortoise Beetle (Aspidimorpha sanctaecrucis) as the 500th Bug of the Day partly because it's related to the Golden Tortoise Beetle (Charidotella sexpunctata), seen here, which was the bug that inspired this entire series. It was an early entry back in 2017.

I also want to say thanks to Lankster (@woohooflimby), whose series Monkey Jam of the Day inspired me to do Bug of the Day. After reaching 500 entries, he concluded the series, which is why I wanted to reach at least 500 entries myself. Thank you for the inspiration, friend.

Each time I hit a new Bug of the Day milestone (#100, #150, #200, etc.), I chose a shiny, golden bug for the entry. I'll list the past milestones from the series here. First off, here was Bug of the Day #100:

Bug of the Day: Golden Carpenter Ant Found in tropical rainforests of Central & S. America. Digs nests in the wood of dead trees or soft-wood trees using strong mandibles. When threatened or hunting, they bite their enemy & spray formic acid from their abdomen into the wound.

Bug of the Day: Golden Egg Bug (Phyllomorpha laciniata) Coreid bug noted for its habit of laying its eggs on other members of its species, who act as mobile nests. This offers more protection for the eggs than a static location, though females will also lay them on host plants.

Bug of the Day: Golden Green Stag Beetle (Lamprima latreillii) Males are metallic golden green and appear golden yellow in the sun. Males have large mandibles. Females are smaller and look quite different. Will feign death as a defense. Feeds on dead wood. Found in Australia.

Bug of the Day: Golden-backed Snipe Fly (Chrysopilus thoracicus) Large species of predatory fly found in deciduous woodlands of eastern North America. Notable golden patch on upper thorax. Genus name "Chrysopilus" means "golden hair". Colors might be mimicry of a hymenopteran.

Bug of the Day: Green Longhorn (Adela reaumurella) Species of fairy longhorn moth. Males have black hair on head & thorax and very long thread-shaped antennas. During spring, males swarm in sunshine. Females that fly through a swarm are caught by a male and they mate in flight.

Bug of the Day: Gold-spotted Ghost Moth (Sthenopis pretiosus) Found in forests of northeastern U.S. & southeastern Canada. Adults appear in early summer. Crepuscular. Wingspan 60-70mm. Smaller size and distinct coloring for genus, with gold spots on wings. Larvae feed on ferns.
