Lee Min Ho isn't enough to save the mess of The King: Eternal Monarch

The finale episode of South Korea’s latest (would-be) blockbuster drama, The King: Eternal Monarch, aired last week as the series fizzled to an end following poor ratings in the country.

On Netflix Singapore, however, the fantasy romance has consistently shot to the top of the daily Top 10 rankings since it premiered on 17 April. Netflix had been releasing two episodes weekly, instead of its usual full-season drop, as it had to follow the broadcast schedule on SBS in South Korea.

The contradiction between the show’s poor reception in South Korea and its popularity on Netflix is a little surprising, but I will offer my own theories for that in this review.

A co-production between Studio Dragon and Netflix, the 16-episode show’s low ratings in South Korea were unexpected, as there had been a lot of hype surrounding The King before its premiere.

The drama had quite a few things going on for it to justify the anticipation surrounding it.

A-lister Lee Min Ho, arguably the most popular male celebrity in South Korea, stars in the lead role in The King in his first drama role since he completed his military service – his last drama was Legend Of The Blue Sea in 2016.

The King also stars Kim Go Eun as the female lead, who shot to popularity for her role in the mega hit drama Goblin in 2016.

The King: Eternal Monarch was written by acclaimed scriptwriter Kim Eun Sook, who is known for other smash hits, including Goblin, Descendants Of The Sun (2016), and Mr Sunshine (2018).

The series was directed by Baek Sang Hoon, who also helmed Descendants Of The Sun.

For the above reasons, The King had been touted as a sure-fire hit. However, although the star-studded cast put in great performances, the storyline and pacing leave much to be desired. The fact that the show got embroiled in political and celebrity controversies also affected its ratings.

Lee Min Ho’s character, Lee Gon, is, well, the king of the Kingdom of Korea, an alternate version of the actual Korean peninsula that we’re familiar with. In this parallel universe, North and South Korea are united under a constitutional monarchy, where a prime minister rules the country on behalf of the king.

When Lee Gon was a child, his evil uncle, Lee Lim, tries to violently take the throne from Gon’s father, the king at that time. Lim fails, but not before killing Gon’s father. He escapes into our universe with half of a magical flute, Manpasikjeok, that somehow exists in the alternate Korea, which is capable of opening doors into other worlds. The other half of the flute was rescued by Gon.

Lee Gon then becomes the king in his father’s place. As he chases Lee Lim into our world, he meets police officer Jeong Tae Eul (Kim Go Eun), who he inexplicably falls in love with.

The first few episodes of The King were way too slow (and they’re long episodes, each episode being almost the length of a movie, which is normal for Korean dramas.) There was hardly any plot and a host of side characters who didn’t have much to do with the main story.

The pacing picked up slightly as the series progressed, but the overall plot is very confusing due to time travel and lots of jumping back and forth in time in the narrative of the story itself. The actors’ good performances could not make up for the poor storyline and slow pacing.

The fantasy element might make you think that it’s an action-adventure story, but this is first and foremost a romantic drama. There are a few action set pieces throughout the series, but a lot of time is spent on Lee Gon and Tae-eul talking and flirting and generally romancing each other.

I’m very impressed with the number of product placements that they managed to feature in the show. In every episode, products or services from specific brands featured repeatedly in the script include bubble tea, fried chicken, bottled coffee, lip balm/facial mist, food delivery, kimchi, a bakery, and some sort of space helmet spa device. The heavy-handed in-show advertising got quite ridiculous quickly; it’s very distracting for a viewer trying to follow the storyline.

Apparently, product placements are a common practice in Korean dramas, but even in South Korea itself, people criticised the show for being so blatant with its product placements.

I imagine, though, that this is a form of wish fulfilment for many viewers who swoon over Lee Min Ho. Lee is a very good-looking guy, of course – that hair! That skin! Those gentle yet firm eyes! I imagine that it’s one of the current top Netflix shows because of this.

The King performed poorly in South Korea due to some domestic controversies surrounding the show. South Korea doesn’t have very good relations with its neighbour Japan – so South Koreans were very offended when the king’s palace in the alternate-universe Korea incorporated Japanese architecture, and a Japanese warship in a maritime battle scene between Japan and the Kingdom of Korea looked similar to an actual Korean warship.

Actress Jung Eun Chae, who plays the prime minister in the alternate Korea, also got embroiled in a scandal about an old affair she had with a married singer when the show aired, which led to negative backlash.

That being said, the show has obviously performed very well on Netflix so far, based on the Top 10 rankings in Singapore. Perhaps audiences outside South Korea, oblivious to the controversies peculiar to South Korean society, tuned in each week just to stare googly-eyed at Lee Min Ho’s face.

This review is for those who know nothing about the show and, now that the full series has been released, are wondering whether to watch it. My advice: don’t.

That Time a Fly Landed on Hillary Clinton at the Second 2016 Debate (Video)

The fly that landed on Vice President Mike Pence’s head during Wednesday’s VP debate generated a lot of buzz — sorry not sorry — but while the slightly embarrassing moment quickly became the darling of social media, its wasn’t actually the first time an insect has made an appearance at a major election debate.Four years ago, during the second presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, a fly briefly landed on the Democratic nominee’s face while she was speaking. Though the fly quickly flew away, that didn’t stop some Twitter users from creating parody Clinton fly accounts to capture the moment. Take a look at the moment from 2016 above. Also Read: People Want to Know What Was Up With Mike Pence's Eye During the DebateBut during Wednesday’s matchup between Pence and Kamala Harris, that enterprising fly decided to stay in the national TV spotlight for a much longer time, conspicuously landing on Pence’s white hair for nearly two minutes. The moment quickly went viral and was celebrated with dozens upon dozens of parody Pence fly accounts on Twitter, plus a ton of mockery. Even the Joe Biden campaign got in on the fun, first with a tweet asking for donations to “help this campaign fly,” followed soon after by a commemorative fly swatter with the slogan “truth over flies” for $10.The Biden campaign also bought the URL “flywillvote.com,” which redirects to the voter registration platform I Will Vote.Read original story That Time a Fly Landed on Hillary Clinton at the Second 2016 Debate (Video) At TheWrap

A Fly Landed on Mike Pence During the Debate and People Are Freaking Out (Video)

In what will go down as likely the most memorable moment from Wednesday’s vice-presidential debate, a fly landed on Mike Pence’s head and remained there for more than a minute before flying off. No Really.During the last half hour of the event, the fly buzzed in and parked itself on some prime real estate — the right side of the vice president’s head where, thanks to Pence’s bright white hair, it stood out plain as day until, just as visibly, it buzzed off.But don’t take out word for it. Mike Pence's Red Eye a Concern at VP Debate

Among the many health-related issues discussed during Wednesday's Vice Presidential debate between Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris, Twitter was abuzz with observations about Mike Pence's left eye, which appeared red. Among a choice few: "What's wrong with Pence's eye? Anyone else seeing this?" "It has been reported, even though it's limited in the medical literature, that anywhere from 11 to 30 percent of COVID-positive patients can have pink eye—it can be an early sign," Dr. Jennifer Ashton told ABC News, "but he also could have just had some makeup in his eye." Given that conjunctivitis can be a symptom of COVID-19—and that the President was recently hospitalized with the virus—it raises the question: How does COVID-19 affect the eye? Read on, and to get through this pandemic at your healthiest, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus.  1 Watch Out for Pink Eye "One of the more difficult aspects of the current novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is keeping track of potential new symptoms and links to other conditions," reports the Cleveland Clinic, which has been recommending health measures for the Presidential debates. "Case in point: a new study that shows a potential overlap between coronavirus and eye conditions like conjunctivitis, more commonly known as pink eye." "The number of COVID-19 patients that have been reported to have eye symptoms is relatively low. And when you have a population that small, it's really hard to get a picture of the story because we just don't have as many data points," optometrist Alexandra Williamson, OD, told the Clinic. The Rx: If you have conjunctivitis, call your medical professional to discuss. 2 Don't Rub or Touch Your Eyes "The most common way for COVID to enter through the eyes is by touching your face or rubbing your eyes after your hands have come into contact with an infected surface," Dr. Kevin Lee, eye physician&surgeon from the Golden Gate Eye Associates within the Pacific Vision Eye Institute in San Francisco, explains to Eat This, Not That! Health. "People don't realize how often they touch their face, so please be cognizant."The Rx: "Avoid rubbing your eyes or touching your face especially after contact with public surfaces." 3 You've Been Exposed to Aerosol Transmission Since COVID has the ability to spread by aerosol transmission and respiratory droplets, Dr. Lee points out that just being in the vicinity of an infected person can actually result in transmission through the eyes. "For instance, if someone who has the coronavirus sneezes, the droplets can actually enter through the eyes," he explains. The Rx: How can you prevent this from happening? Dr. Diaz suggests wearing glasses, in order to create a physical barrier, "which may block droplets from reaching the eye," he explains. "In that sense, they function as 'safety glasses' which we use for various activities and occupations."RELATED: Dr. Fauci Says You Can Catch COVID This Way After All 4 If You Wear Contact Lenses, Be Careful You might want to think about swapping out your contact lenses with glasses until the coronavirus pandemic is over, urges Dr. Lee. "Contact lens wearers have a higher risk of transmitting the virus through their eyes." This is especially true if contact lense-wearers do not practice good hygiene such as not properly cleaning their lenses, sleeping in contacts, not washing their hands, or extending the wear of their contacts past the recommended date. The Rx: At the very least, practice good contact lens hygiene. Better yet, wear glasses. 5 Don't Share Eye Drops or Cosmetics Sharing products that make contact with the eyes—ranging from eye drops to mascara—can put you in direct contact with the virus. "Coronavirus can be found and transmitted through ocular secretions, like tears, so it has the ability to enter the eyes through products like cosmetics and eye drops," explains Dr. Lee. "It's possible for the tip of the eye dropper or mascara to be contaminated by coming in contact with the ocular secretions of someone who is COVID positive."The Rx: He urges the importance of not sharing eye drops or cosmetics with family members or friends. Additionally, if you've used any products while experiencing COVID-like symptoms, "be sure to throw the products away as they've likely been contaminated." RELATED: I'm an Infectious Disease Doctor and Would Never Touch This 6 It May Be Allergies If you are one of the millions of people who suffer from allergies, Vicente Diaz, MD, MPH, a Yale Medicine ophthalmologist, points out that it is a good idea to do everything you can to control them. "This can prevent rubbing the eyes, which can be tempting when a reaction to pollen causes them to itch," he explains.  7 Don't Share Towels and Pillows Communal face towels and pillowcases can be coronavirus culprits. "COVID can also be transmitted by the use of shared face towels and pillow covers," Dr. Lee maintains. The Rx: "Avoid using bathroom hand towels on your face, and be sure to clean them regularly." Keep in mind this is also true for shared pillow covers—whether in the bedroom or in common spaces. RELATED: I'm a Doctor and Here's a Sure Sign You've Had COVID 8 So What Can You Do? "Lack of proper eye protection was associated with an increased risk of SARS transmission," says one study in All About Vision. "Therefore, the eyes are suspected as a route for spreading the SARS virus and, possibly, COVID-19." They recommend you:"Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water. If you don't have access to soap or water, clean your hands with an alcohol-based sanitizer.Resist the urge to touch your eyes, nose and mouth.Stay away from people who've been exposed to or contracted the coronavirus.Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, or use the inside of your elbow. Throw tissues in the trash immediately after using them."And to get through this pandemic at your healthiest, don't miss these 35 Places You're Most Likely to Catch COVID.

People Want to Know What Was Up With Mike Pence’s Eye During the Debate

The vice presidential debate between Sen. Kamala Harris and Mike Pence was certainly a more muted affair than last week’s debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, but it certainly managed to spawn plenty of chatter nonetheless. And much of that chatter was about Pence’s left eye, which looked pretty red.Yo what’s up with Pence’s eye?— Jemele Hill (@jemelehill) October 8, 2020Is that pink eye 👀 That left eye looks pink. Which is relevant given the coronavirus outbreak in the White House. There was a concern coming into the vice presidential debate that Pence might have it as well, and so the candidates were moved to 13 feet apart — up from seven feet during last week’s debate — and plexiglass barriers were placed on the stage between them.Pence has said that he has been tested daily and has not tested positive. And in a statement provided to NBC News after the debate, his press secretary, Devin O’Malley, said Pence took a rapid antigen test with a PCR on Tuesday and Wednesday and tested negative both times, calling talk he might have COVID-19 “completely reckless.” However, that isn’t necessarily a definitive answer, as PCR tests have up to a 20% false negative rate, according a study by Johns Hopkins researchers. And even without that false negative rate, that doesn’t mean Pence is free of infection. An internal government memo obtained by ABC News revealed that at least 34 people connected to the White House have thus far tested positive for COVID-19. Among them are the First Lady Melania Trump, presidential advisers Hope Hicks and Stephen Miller, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, KellyAnne Conway, Chris Christie, three political reporters who cover the White House, and two members of the housekeeping staff at the White House. Also Read: A Fly Landed on Mike Pence During the Debate and People Are Freaking Out (Video)Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniels and Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien also tested positive for COVID-19 in the past week. His eye wasn’t the only surprising way that Pence made inadvertent waves during the debate. Kamala Harris Says She Wouldn’t Trust a Vaccine Trump Recommended

Citing the Trump administration’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kamala Harris said that she’d happily take a vaccine that doctors and scientists recommend — but absolutely not one touted by Donald Trump.Asked at Wednesday’s vice-presidential debate whether she would take a vaccine approved by the Trump administration before or after the election, Harris said she’d be the “first in line” to take the vaccine if health experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci recommended it.“If the public health professionals, if Dr. Fauci, if the doctors tell us that we should take it, I’ll be the first in line to take it, absolutely. ‘The Masked Singer': Giraffe Can’t Believe Robin Thicke Failed to Guess His Identity

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday’s “Masked Singer.”)Not one judge guessed who was behind the Giraffe mask before he was eliminated and revealed on tonight’s episode to be Brian Austin Green. And while the “Beverly Hills, 90210” alum is willing to forgive the incorrect names thrown out by Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and guest panelist Joel McHale, he told TheWrap that Robin Thicke really should have been able to figure out it was him.“I grew up with Robin, I’ve known Robin my whole life,” Green, who dabbled in hip-hop music in the ’90s, said. “We were best friends for probably three years. So that dude knew my voice before I went through puberty and my voice changed. So he knows my cadence, he knows everything about that. And I said to [‘The Masked Singer’] producers in the beginning, ‘The one that I’m most worried about is Robin. If anybody is going to figure out my voice, he is, because he knows me.'”On the season premiere, Green gave his first performance as the Giraffe, singing Black Eyed Peas’ “Let’s Get It Started,” and Thicke guessed that he might be Vanilla Ice, adding that he felt like he knew the voice, but was not able to place it.Also Read: Watch 'Masked Singer' Enlist Clue-Dropping Drone to Keep Things Socially Distanced (Exclusive Video)“So I did the first performance and he says, ‘You ever get that feeling like you know somebody’s voice but you can’t put a face to it? I feel like I’m going to put a face to that voice.’ And he said that and I was like, ‘Oh man, here we go. He’s going to figure me out.’ And so the first episode was that, and then the second performance, it completely strayed.”But in tonight’s episode, he guessed Travis Barker, while some of the other judges went with Green’s “90210” co-star, Jason Priestley.“They are saying things as close as you can come, and they are literally then going in a completely different direction,” Green said. “So, awesome, I think that I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing (after the first episode). As a matter of fact, I’m going to try to do as many things as possible to throw them off at this point, because that’s just going to be the fun of it for me. I’m going to add accents when I’m speaking, I’m going to walk with a limp. I’m going to do all of these things for the fun of it to see how far I can get. And then after the second episode that was it for me, so that’s as far as I’m going to get,” he added, laughing. Also Read: 'The Masked Singer' Season 4: Here Are the Best Fan Guesses for Identities of Group B ContestantsAnd even though everyone was “way off” in their guesses, Green truly holds Thicke the most responsible here.“I love Robin, but he’s terrible at that game. He’s horrible,” the actor said, noting that he and Thicke slept over at each other’s houses, guest-starred on an episode of Thicke’s late father Alan Thicke’s “Growing Pains” together, and even had a music group as kids.Green said that there are no hard feelings and the two laughed about it after he was revealed on the show. Green even told Thicke he had initially been planning on singing one of Thicke’s songs.“So I text him as I was driving home, and he had just sent me a laughing emoji, and I told him after that, dude, my first song, I was going to do ‘When I Get You Alone,’ until I sang it — that’s a ridiculously hard song to sing. And he was like, dude, I can barely sing that song. So don’t feel bad. You did a great job.”“The Masked Singer” airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on Fox.Read original story ‘The Masked Singer': Giraffe Can’t Believe Robin Thicke Failed to Guess His Identity At TheWrap

But following last week’s wild self-elimination by Gremlin (who turned out to be Mickey Rourke) this week’s episode got us back on track with a decision made by the judges and at-home audience. On Wednesday’s episode, Popcorn, Giraffe, Sun and Snow Owls (the show’s first-ever two-headed costume) all competed during Group A’s playoffs round. After those four Season 4 contestants performed, it was time for panelists Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke and guest judge Joel McHale, along with the “Masked Singer” super fans voting from home, to choose the “weakest” competitor for elimination. Also Read: 'The Masked Singer': Giraffe Can't Believe Robin Thicke Failed to Guess His IdentityThe masked singer in question was Giraffe, who sang Kool & The Gang’s “Get Down on It.” He was voted off and unmasked to reveal “Beverly Hills, 90210” alum Brian Austin Green. Vice Presidential Debate Tickets Come With COVID-19 Disclaimer

If audience members at Wednesday night’s vice presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence contract COVID-19, the Commission on Presidential Debates says it is not liable.Tickets for Wednesday night’s Harris-Pence matchup at the University of Utah included a disclaimer that the ticket holder “relieves CPD and the event site host of any and all liability of any kind or character, including in the event of live, natural disaster, acts of terrorism, or any other act, error, event, incident, accident, injury or sickness (including Covid-19),” according to a photo taken by a pool reporter at the debate. It’s not immediately clear if this same COVID-19 disclaimer was present for last week’s presidential debate between Trump and Biden, and representatives for CPD did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment. Also Read: Stephen Miller Becomes At Least 20th Person in Close Contact With Trump to Test Positive for COVID-19According to a pool report, there are about 20 seats — distanced at least six feet apart — reserved for guests in front of the stage. Another 60 seats have been given to University of Utah students who were chosen through a lottery system. In light of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak in the White House, which has infected more than 20 people who have been in contact with President Trump, additional safety measures, like plexiglass, have been set up to separate the two candidates on the stage. But health experts have cautioned that the plexiglass won’t do much to protect against the spread of the virus, particularly since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently issued updated guidance that said the virus can be spread via airborne transmission to people who are further than six feet apart.Read original story Vice Presidential Debate Tickets Come With COVID-19 Disclaimer At TheWrap

Young Bernie Sanders Makes a Blood Pact With Stalin in Satirical Comedy ‘Free Lunch Express’ (Exclusive Trailer)

In a plotline nobody saw coming (let alone a movie being made about it) a young Bernie Sanders swears a blood oath to Joseph Stalin in the trailer for the upcoming satirical comedy, “Free Lunch Express.”The movie is clearly not trying to portray Sanders in a positive light. For example, at one point, a young Sanders can be seen in front of a propaganda poster of Stalin, saying, “I totally pledge with this blood oath to dedicate my life to never picking up a dinner check, never donating to charity, and like in the glorious Soviet Union, making sure the government pays for everything.”Malcolm McDowell (“A Clockwork Orange,” “Star Trek: Generations,” “Halloween”) serves as the film’s narrator. “Aw, Bernie, bless his cotton socks,” McDowell caps off the trailer by saying. Also Read: 'Bad President' Movie Trailer Features the Devil Coaching Donald Trump - and Stormy Daniels as Herself (Video)There’s really no way to properly describe “Free Lunch Express,” so here is how the producers sum up the film:Once upon a time lived a man in New England named Bernard Sanders. His friends called him Bernie. He was going to run for President of the United States of America and create great change for the people. He was going to make the world a better place. But his story actually begins in Brooklyn, 1953. Bullied as a youth, Bernie Sanders becomes interested in communism. Tired of the rich kids gloating their status in his face, he vows to never pay for another meal again. It’s time for the government to pay for everything! As Bernie grows up, he is visited by the spirits of pioneering politicians, who guide him through the trenches of the political system and warn him of the dangers of the one percent. But nothing can deter Bernie’s dreams. His journeys through the decades takes him through marijuana-infused visits with Ben & Jerry, debates with Hillary Clinton and cocktails with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The path to the White House may be paved with good intentions…usually… but Bernie Sanders has got a long and winding road to go if he’s going to earn himself those free lunches. Also Read: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Nominates Bernie Sanders in DNC Remarks: Watch Here (Video)“Free Lunch Express” was written and directed by Lenny Britton (“The World According to Billy Potwin,” “Precious Find,” “The Gnar”), and produced by Britton, Sam Brittian (“Redlands,” “And The Past Recedes,” “Labyrinths”), and Brad Broyles (“The World According to Billy Potwin,” “Fan Club – News Done Right!”).The film stars Sam Brittian (“Redlands,” “And The Past Recedes,” “Labyrinths”), Jonah Britton (“The World According to Billy Potwin”), Charles Hutchins ( “The Connected”), Robert William Campbell (“Hawaii Five-O,” “Vice Principals”), Laura Aleman (“Runner Runner,” “Sol de Mediancoch”), Don Frankel (“The Bold and The Beautiful,” “When We Rise,”), Alexander Aguila (“Shameless”), Jessica Jade Andres (“Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far on Foot,” “9-1-1”), “Elaine Ballace” (“The MissAdventures of Camp Elaine”), William Charlton (“The Rum Diary,” “Money Train”), Cynthia Kania (“Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives,” “Criminal Minds”), Alycia Cooper (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”), Sudana Bobatoon (“Vice Squad,” “Secret Agent 00 Soul”), Ryan Cole (“Veronica Mars”), Anthony Traina (“Shameless”, “Roman J Israel, Esq.”), Kevin Sorbo (“Let There Be Light,” “The Santa Suit”), and Eric Roberts (“Runaway Train,” “The Expendables,” “Inherent Vice”).Read original story Young Bernie Sanders Makes a Blood Pact With Stalin in Satirical Comedy ‘Free Lunch Express’ (Exclusive Trailer) At TheWrap

11 Actually Not Boring Vice Presidents, From Aaron Burr to Dan Quayle (Photos)

Mike Pence and Tim Kaine may not be America’s most exciting politicians, and they’re running for a position that’s often been considered an afterthought. However, the office of Vice President hasn’t just been a breeding ground for future presidents — although none since George H.W. Bush — it’s also had plenty of big personalities and hijinks during its 227-year history. In honor of the soon-to-be-departing, avuncular Joe Biden, here are 11 other vice presidents whose lives — and tenures — were not boring.Aaron Burr(1801-1805)Burr became the first sitting vice president to shoot someone, killing political rival and future Broadway inspiration Alexander Hamilton in an 1804 duel in New Jersey. After he left office, Burr embarked on an ill-fated  — and financially ruinous — venture in the Western frontier.John C. Calhoun(1825-1832)Calhoun served under both John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, strongly advocating for slavery and a limited federal government. He resigned while a lame duck at the end of 1832 — Martin Van Buren was set to assume the role — in order to become a senator representing South Carolina.Martin Van Buren(1833-1837)Van Buren became Jackson’s VP after winning a political struggle with Calhoun, who initially sought to block him from a ministerial position, thus ending his political career, only to have it backfire and make Van Buren appear more sympathetic. Van Buren proved his talents as a wheeler and dealer during his vice presidency, famously defusing a contentious argument with lion of the Senate Henry Clay by asking for a pinch from Clay’s snuff box.John Tyler(1841)Tyler had one of the shortest VP reigns in history — he became president when William Henry Harrison died as a result of pneumonia he contracted while delivering a two-hour inaugural address in freezing weather.John Breckinridge(1857-1861)Breckinridge became the youngest-ever vice president, assuming the office at just 36 years of age. He became a senator after the election of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first-ever member of that body to be convicted of treason, after he joined the Confederate Army.Andrew Johnson(1865)Johnson also had a short VP run, acceding to the office when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford’s Theater. Johnson was a Democrat who ran with Republican Lincoln on a unity ticket, and he proved to be one of the worst presidents ever; he fought against rights newly won by African Americans and was impeached — but not removed from office — in 1868.John Nance Garner(1933-1941)One of America’s most colorfully nicknamed elected officials, conservative Democrat “Cactus Jack” cut a deal with Franklin D. Roosevelt that delivered FDR the Democratic nomination. However, Garner had little use for the VP spot he assumed, calling it “not worth a bucket of warm piss.” Garner ran against FDR in 1940, getting only 61 votes at the convention, and retired from public life the next year.Henry A. Wallace(1941-1945)Wallace, a firebrand New Dealer, replaced Garner and served as FDR’s running mate for his third term. The delegates at the party convention initially booed his nomination, but Roosevelt rolled to the presidency in an electoral college rout. However, his outspoken liberal advocacy and feuds with other Cabinet members made Wallace a one-term VP; he was replaced by Harry Truman in 1945. FDR gave Wallace a consolation prize, naming him Commerce Secretary and making Wallace the last former VP to serve in the Cabinet.Spiro Agnew(1969-1973)Nixon’s first VP was famous for his alliterative insults, such as “nattering nabobs of negativism.” However, he quickly lost the respect of his chief executive and became the first vice president since Calhoun to resign the office, subsequently pleading no contest to tax evasion, part of a resolution to bribery allegations. Agnew and Nixon did not speak from the time he resigned until Nixon’s death.Dan Quayle(1989-1993)George H.W. Bush’s running mate was not the most articulate VP — he remained a fixture of cable news and tabloids for his malapropisms and once (incorrectly) fixed a student’s spelling of “potato” to say “potatoe.” Quayle also used TV character Murphy Brown — a single mother — as an example of the degradation of values he felt was perpetrated by pop culture.Dick Cheney(2001-2009)The man who many believe was the shadow operator behind the presidency of George W. Bush joined Aaron Burr as sitting vice presidents who shot someone else while in office. Cheney shot attorney Harry Whittington in the face during a 2006 quail hunt, which both men deemed an accident. He was also instrumental in providing justification for the Bush administration’s decision to invade Iraq.Read original story 11 Actually Not Boring Vice Presidents, From Aaron Burr to Dan Quayle (Photos) At TheWrap
