研究活動

森欣司博士は、1974年から23年間日立製作所の研究員を勤め、1997年から15年間東京工業大学情報理工学研究科、兼イノベーションマネジメント研究科の教授を勤めたのち、2012年から早稲田大学グリーン・コンピューティング・システム研究機構の客員教授、2014年より早稲田大学理工学術院基幹理工学研究科情報理工学専攻教授、2017年から早稲田大学グリーン・コンピューティング・システム研究機構招聘研究員を勤めている。

森博士は、コンピュータシステムの信頼性・保守性の分野に貢献してきた。1977年に自律分散システム(ADS: Autonomous Decentralized System)のコンセプトを提案し、それに基づいたアーキテクチャ、通信技術、処理技術、フォールトトレランス技術、拡張・保守技術、ソフトウェア開発技術、評価技術を研究・開発した。さらにこれらの技術のデファクト標準化も成し遂げた。最近では、自律分散システム技術の発展を図り、サービスの安全・安定稼動を保証するアシュアランス技術も研究・開発し、今日に至っている。この自律分散システムの提案と技術、実用化の貢献に対し、IEEEより、自律分散システムの父(Founding Father of ADS)の称号が与えられた。

自律分散システムのコンセプトによる技術と革新的な実用化は、制御システムの分野だけでなく情報システム分野にも広がっている。例えば、JR東日本の新幹線システム、東京圏鉄道輸送管理システムATOS(Autonomous Decentralized Transport Operation System)、運賃徴収だけでなく電子商取引にも使われるICカードシステム(Suica)、川崎製鉄における鉄鋼プラント制御システム、ブリヂストンの生産管理システムFOA(Flow Oriented Approach)、朝日新聞社の新聞生産工程管理システムなどがあり、それらのシステムの合計売上高は現在までに5,000億円に達した。1977年に自律分散システムが提案されてから現在に至るまで、自律分散技術とアプリケーションは世界に広がり続けている。

森博士の顕著な功績や研究として、世界各国に登録された350件以上の特許、書籍や会議における500件以上の論文がある。さらに、学会活動としてはIEEEを主催学会、電子情報通信学会をはじめとする日本の3学会を共催学会として1993年に自律分散システム国際会議(ISADS)を設立し、Steering Committee Chairを務めており、隔年ごとに開催している。また米国国防省とともに1996年にアシュアランス技術に関するIEEE主催のHASE(High Assurance System Engineering)国際会議の設立に尽力した。

森博士の功績に対して、数多くの賞が授与されている。そのひとつとして、産業分野・学術分野の功績を表彰する市村産業賞がある。森博士は、第26回市村産業賞本賞（賞金1,000万円）を三笠宮親王殿下より授与された。博士は、コンピュータシステム分野における顕著な功績を表彰するIEEE Tsutomu Kanai Awardを設立するため、この賞金をIEEE Computer Societyへ寄付した。また、IEEE COMPCON '84のBest Paper Award、全国発明表彰発明賞(1990年)や科学技術庁長官賞(1994年)などを受賞し、IEEE（米国電気電子学会）とIEICE（電子情報通信学会）の2つの学会のフェローに就任している。

近年はアジア地域に同技術を普及させることを目指して中国の6大学、パキスタンの1大学の教授をも務め、さらに2000年にIEEE主催、電子情報通信学会協賛によるIWDCCA(International Workshop on Distributed Computing, Communication and Application)とIWADS(International Workshop on Autonomous Decentralized Systems)などのアジアの国々を主な対象とした国際会議を設立し、以降継続的に開催している。2012年には、中国政府から、「千人計画（世界1000人優秀専門家）」として選任された。

なお、森博士は、永年に亘る研究開発活動の経験をもとに、2005年に東京工業大学において技術経営専門職大学院の設立に携わり、さらに2012年に早稲田大学において、官庁、企業の人材育成のため、社会人能力開発講座（グローバル化における技術研究開発と事業、Advanced Professional Course）を設立、また、2014年より、早稲田大学理工学術院のリーディング大学院おいて、技術とその事業化・グローバル化への推進に向け学生、社会人への教育に貢献している。
