Why wont it let my computer access my git hub? It works on my win7 machine. I have the same private and pub key in my .ssh folder in ubuntu, and I've added the private key to the SSH agent. Also add a ufw exception.

First of all, use gitlab instead of github. Github was bought by microsoft.
Are you using the right username and email? You may have configured git using --global on another project with a different account.
Do you have multiple keys in .ssh?

I'm not using git lab. I don't have other keys. When I authenticate with ssh -T it says my username and that I'm in. But as soon as I try to clone it won't.

I went ahead and made a new key. The other key was made on win7 and I think that fucked with the file permissions, that even chmod couldn't change. I purged all identities from SSH agent and made a config file in .ssh to tell it to use my custom named rsa key for git hub. It works and I can clone, however it won't let me clone in var/www/html; my Apache server. I want to use it as a local host sever for my projects. Is there permissions or something I need to change so I can clone a git repository in that Apache folder?

so i have one of these from local yard sale. it can't handle even 32bit windows very well at all.
i plan to stick it in a 24" vizio TV from 2014 and just have it loop some video loop in VLC and stick it in the window of my shop.
given it's super low spec'd, what's the best linux distro to run from main drive?

to loop a video via VLC all you need is a working xorg session an VLC. You don't have to run anything else, let alone a full desktop environment.
2GB of memory for such a task is overkill. Even if using software decoding the Atom CPU should handle a 1080p video file.

get debian or centos server installation for stability and call it a day.

Yeah I would say you don't even need VLC.
ffmpeg package is supplied with the ffplay utility which uses ffmpeg backend to actually play the video.

Look into it. The simpler the set up is the less headaches you'd get in the future
A stack of
>wayland for display server
>ffplay for media playback
>ssh daemon to control it remotely
Don't install an audio server, and let ffplay know you want to ignore any audio streams available in the file so it has all of the CPU power to decode the video in software.

i wish i was way more fluent in SSH and doing command line stuff.
i have some time before my hdmi 90 degree adapters come in, so i'll be looking into these. things.
in fact i was looking at xorg and weyland. but seems they are some level of abstraction beyond my normal user style.
i'm an old windows kid, trying to learn the linux for all the things windows sucks on.

Why is everyone saying this? Wayland is just a library, it's not executable unto itself, and it's not run as any kind of display server.
When you launch a wayland WM only the WM runs and it loads the wayland library.
That's why it's noticeably lower latency than Xorg since it doesn't require communication between a WM and a server.

Hi I'm thinking about switching to gentoo as daily, however the system maintenance seems to me a bit complex. For example, when installing a new kernel is there a way to automatically update the grub configuration files? Is this a bad idea and if so, why is it?
I update my current install every 1/2 weeks and it's generally just a command I run and then leave alone (as long as there are no errors), then sometimes i reboot.
The idea of gentoo seems nice, but I don't want to spend hours updating my machine (note: I don't count compilation time as "time spent", since it's autonomous)

Please explain to me how copyright is not connected to class struggle. Nearly all patents are held by major corporations. Copyright is literally an institution to stifle competition in favor of the world's monopolies and duopolies and keep the little guy down. In music, it is used to make record labels and streaming services richer and richer while the actual musicians see next to nothing of the profits. In tech, it is one factor of many that uphold giant barriers of entry for new players in the field. It stands in the way of progress. Imagine where we would be if all software was free and open source, including stuff like Windows, Adobe, SAP and so on.

GRUB is nasty because it's dependent on stuff in the /boot folder. You'd want to use refind, keep the kernel in the efi partition and create separate boot entries for your current install and the soon to be installed gentoo. Use the same known-to-work kernel but when booting to gentoo only the kernel parameters change.

Why would it be unreliable? Those are commands I use to update the kernel on gentoo anyway, so I just aliased them into one short command. Also you should enable symlink use flag for the kernel so you don't have to do eselect kernel set every time a new kernel source appears.

How do I create an exact copy 1:1 of an SSD to another SSD?
The SSD I want to clone is using 30 GB of it's 500 GB capacity, and using dd would needlessly copy empty space to the new SSD, not to mention the long time it would take.

the track pad scrolling had some "momentum" to it, I mean even when I let go it would keep scrolling and if I swipe fast it would go fast and if I swipe slow it would go slow.

Which distro would you recommend for someone who wants to do things from a command line? Possibly learn. I honestly want to go balls deep since the only reason i have for using GNU is that i'm just looking to compile and run C. IDEs and texteditors in windows seem inuintitive to me and virtual machines run like butt, i just want to replicate the simplicity of writing a file in C, compiling it, and running it just like that, but might as well learn something extra at the same time.

You can do everything from the terminal even with Ubuntu. In fact the 'Ubuntu software' thing only installs snaps so if you want normal programs you need to use apt anyway.

Debian has a run-of-the-mill graphical installer. Arch is installed via the command line which requires some knowledge how it works.

Debian comes with a bunch of pre-installed software, including a desktop environment of your choice. On Arch, you have to install everything manually.

Debian has a stable release roughly every two years, which then gets supported for three years. Arch is a rolling release.

Debian sometimes has very outdated software sometimes. Arch is always on the bleeding edge.

Debian has the largest amount of officially supported packages available out of all linux distributions (though most Debian-based distros also benefit from this). But Arch has the Arch User Repository where everyone can upload user scripts to build packages which are not available through the official repositories.

Debian is the grandpa of the linux distro family with literally hundreds of other distros based on it, especially Ubuntu and its further derivatives. Arch's derivatives are mostly niche, developer-oriented distros - or just graphical installer with some basic packages and theming to make the initial setup easier. The big exception is Manjaro which is probably the most noob-friendly Arch distro where everything is supposed to work out of the box.

not necessarily true if you use the minimal net install which is pretty much the standard now
with the net install you’ll be prompted to select from a set of software collections that includes desktop environments. however you do not have to select a de if you don’t want to.
A net install with just the standard system utilities results in a system of about 120 packages and if you choose to leave off the standard utilities you’ll end up around 50 packages.

Yeah that's true but it kind of defeats the whole purpose, doesn't it? The point of Arch is to tailor your OS exactly to your needs, which you are not really doing if you're just copying instructions from youtube.

At the very least, you should know what the options do and where you want to deviate from the guide you're using.
You can of course also just use one of the Arch-based distros which are basically just tweaked installers or Zen installer as >>77985115 pointed out.

I'm working from home and my work consists in part of answering phone calls. As such, I have a headset plugged into my phone. I would like to, if possible, broadcast the sound from my computer to my phone, but give the phone's sound priority, so that I can watch videos and such on my computer without having to use speakers or move my headphones back and forth every time I answer/end a call.

Ask your friends if they would be okay making hiring decisions based on race, sex, sexuality, or any other kind of identity outside of your control.
Entire countries have rallied against this. It is bigger than the tech industry alone and should not make a return in society.

I've got a small sized SSD fully formated for Windows 10 installed and 1TB HDD with 450GB and unformatted space left.

It's very difficult to explain what I mean, because I think the internet has changed a lot. But suffice it to say that, like I wrote after that part, I don't actually think there is any real racism/sexism or hostility to any particular groups in general in the coding space. My friend introduced me to Linux through Ubuntu recently, and I love it. Feels so much faster than Windows, and I love htop. Using sigterm or kill actually feels responsive compared to End Task in Windows.

So I'm almost done setting up my linux work station for webshit. My plan is to have my git repositories set up in the html folder in apache (yes I'm a boomer) and configure Apache so it has essentially the same config and modules as the live sever. Problem is I can't clone repos into the html folder since its owned by root and not me. Using sudo doesn't work cause of ssh key reasons. I can't find a lot of info googling this on the subject. One of the few things I found was changing the folder ownership to yourself instead of root. Would this work or cause problems when configuring Apache? Is there a better way to do it?

Mind you this is ONLY for localhost testing. Nothing will ever be portforeworded onto the open web, so security isn't a huge issue.

why dont you use the public_html folder?

With Apache you can use the apache folder (what it is? I dont remember), or you can serve from a folder public_html in your home. Outside your home folder nothing should belong to regular users.

And apache will be forever the best webserver.

I mean, every WM has hotkeys to close programs. But if you're asking about forcefully killing them (like "kill -9") with hotkeys, then I'd say to first check if your WM has that feature already.
Otherwise the challenge is going to be making a script that grabs the right PID. Like getting the PID of the currently active window or something.

If you know the command to kill a program from the command line, if worst comes to worse you can often ctrl+alt+f3, type in your username and password, killall name-of-process, then ctrl+alt+f1 to return to your DE or WM.

I know i3 by default has mod+shift+q kill whatever the active window is as well.

Other things no doubt either have it built in or tools that should make it very easy to set up.

That way linux writes nothing to the storage drive.

First of all, you not knowing your own shortcuts isn't our fault. Look it up or set your own hotkey.

People tend to flock around a "brand" distro where they can see there is a team of people working on stuff that fits their needs who probably aren't going anywhere in the next couple years. interestingly debian does the same shit as ubuntu, and the installer is as easy. to make sure i just went and watched an installation for both. fedora as well, super easy to install.

People tend to flock around a "brand" distro where they can see there is a team of people working on stuff that fits their needs who probably aren't going anywhere in the next couple years. Nice looking websites and active forums raise trust in an OS. And once you have an established user base who support each other whenever a problem arises, you're pretty much set.
interestingly enough fedoras website and support is probably the best. debians is just as many clicks to get a download, but looks unpolished. arch is on the same tier as debians. both 2 clicks. and with linux the userbase is at least a step up from windows users. i mean honestly if i could install debian when i was 13 it must not be that difficult

I remember it as being actually true but I should try again. I told him to complain to IT in any case since an IE requirement in 2020 is simply absurd.
Edge is native on Linux now but it doesn't matter, it's Blink and therefore shouldn't work (I tried with Chrome as well if I remember correctly).

Aside from that he uses Firefox and is happy with it.

1) revert the DocumentRoot to whatever you had before.

2)make sure this line is uncommented.

Include conf/extra/httpd-userdir.conf

And it allows every user to use public_html. (It should be set by default).
apache doesnt know what /~/ is. So you are pointing your document root to path that doesnt exist.

3) is public_html, no public/html.

Help me to kvm windows 10 please, guide me in the right direction. I'm gonna triple boot Windows 10 and 2 other distros.
Distro 1 will be for gaming and home use. Distro 2 will just be for fooling around.
I'm thinking Ubuntu or OpenSUSE for #1, and Void or Gentoo for #2. However, Void is a bit of a compromise distro in my mind, and OpenSUSE is supposedly geared towards professionals.
Are there any other subtle nuances I should consider? Can I use a feature of OpenSUSE or Void to accomplish the unexpected?

Distro 1's main decision point is stability, reliability and "just working". Distro 2 is for customization.
The only reason I didn't consider Debian is because of my experience with it in the past. When I installed the NVIDIA drivers it literally broke everything else. However, I only tried one installation method. Fedora isn't stable enough for the job in my opinion.

unlike windows, linux has good drivers when you press install. only nvidia propietary drivers need to be installed. in fact nvidias website is the outdated one for me. im running 455 drivers, they have downloads for up to 450.
On fedora you run
yum install nvidia nvidia-utilities mesa
then
nvidia-xconfig

virt-manager is a wrapper and abstraction service around a whole bunch of virtualisation tech.
It's mostly used to make qemu-kvm an easy graphical application, but you can use it for a whole bunch of other things like LXC.

for me, all drivers work like a charm, I've never manually installed anything driver-related. Keep in mind that nvidia always requires extra effort if you want to use its proprietary drivers. Nvidia is the worst choice for gnulinux, nonetheless it still is easily configurable.

if youre starting with no driver its just as easy. only complications come from xorg needing to be refreshed
ALSO if you find arch hard to install just run curl -L archfi.sf.net/archfi > archfi

mainly for less difficulty. my experience with linux so far was in a VM that i set up to run a proprietary software that was easier to set up in it, and since I'm still gonna be using that software I plan to keep using fedora until I'm experienced enough to move over to another distro if necessary (and get that software to install in it, since it was intended for that distro and from what I've read there might be extra, undocumented steps in getting it to work on others)
