President Trump says Proud Boys should ‘stand back and stand by’ when asked to condemn white supremacists at the presidential debate
Moderator Chris Wallace asked the US president during the first presidential debate whether he would condemn white supremacists, to which Trump replied, “Sure, I’m willing to do that...Proud Boys, stand back and stand by.” According to the Washington Post, the Proud Boys have been described by the FBI as a far-right, male-exclusive group and the bureau also considers the group to have ties to white nationalism, an assertion to which the group objected. According to CNN, the Proud Boys appeared donning body armor and firearms at recent rallies in Portland, Oregon.

Chris Wallace: "Are you willing, tonight, to condemn white supremacists and militia groups and to say that they need to stand down..." Trump: "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by! But I'll tell you what, somebody's got to do something about antifa and the left."

"According to the Oregonian, Special Agent in Charge Renn Cannon said during a discussion with Portland-area journalists that the FBI had not intended to designate the group as extremist during a slide show with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. That office later released a report that said the FBI considers the group to have ties to white nationalism, an assertion to which the Proud Boys objected." — Washington Post
Members of the Proud Boys — some carrying firearms and wearing body armor — massed at a rally in late September in Portland, Oregon, as counter-rallies unfolded nearby and officials in the tense city braced for violence. — CNN
Moment to remember. Q to Trump: Would you condemn white supremacists? Trump doesn't answer the question & brings up ANTIFA. Wallace: Will you condemn white supremacists? Trump: "Proud Boys, stand back & stand by." That is not a condemnation by any stretch of the imagination.

President Trump says the federal government would designate antifa as a "terrorist organization" and blamed it for violence at protests. His FBI director says antifa is more of an ideology or a movement than an organization. #Debates2020

President Trump was just offered up, on a silver platter, the chance to emphatically denounce white supremacists in front of tens of millions of voters. All he could manage to muster: "Stand back and stand by."

The refusal of the President of the United States to denounce white supremacists on nationwide TV when asked to do so directly, launches us into a new and very, very ominous place.

President Trump's camp says he denounced white supremacy during the debate
“He wants [Proud Boys] to get out of the way. He wants them to not do the things they say they want to do. This is a reprehensible group,” says the Trump campaign press secretary Hogan Gidley on what Trump meant during the debate when he asked the far-right group to “stand by.”
