you get like 1 escape from the hangman's noose, 1 escape from walking the plank etc... They're not in life threatening situations every minute or there's no believably.
higher stakes = more character death. The two are directly correlated, even in fiction. What's more, character death tends to raise the stakes and lead to MORE CHARACTER death. This is both natural and a good thing.
