What Can You Eat When Your Mouth is Numb?

Impeccable Smiles • Jul 25, 2018

One of the reasons people don’t particularly enjoy going to the dentist is that after certain types of procedures, the patient ends up with a numb mouth for several hours.

It can be inconvenient (speaking can become difficult), it can be embarrassing (thanks, drooling!), and it can have a significant impact on the things a person can eat before they regain feeling in their mouth.

Dental Anesthesia 101

Despite the fact that it’s vexing, the reality is that the mouth is numbed as a result of local anesthesia, which makes so many dental procedures more comfortable.

There are two types of injections:

1. Block injections. This type of anesthesia will numb an entire area of the mouth, such as one full side of your mouth, or the lower jaw.

2. Infiltration injections. This anesthetizes a smaller region, such as around a specific tooth.

If injections freak you out, here’s some news to give you peace of mind: dentists usually apply a numbing gel to the site before the needle ever touches it. And while this is a wonderful way for you to have your procedure without feeling much, the downside is that the effects of the anesthesia usually lasts for several hours beyond your dental appointment.

What can I Eat When my Mouth is Numb From Dental Anesthesia?

Since chewing and moving your tongue may be difficult due to the numbing, we advise that you stick with eating soft, easy to swallow foods, such as:

– Mashed potatoes
– Soup
– Fruit/veggie smoothies
– Oatmeal
– Applesauce
– Sherbet
– Cooked butternut squash
– Soft cheese
– Risotto
– Scrambled eggs
– Mashed bananas
– Hummus

Avoid consuming alcohol, since it may interact with the anesthesia.

Regardless of your choice of a soft meal, due to your loss of sensation, you may be biting harder than you think and could injure the sides of your mouth or tongue, so be extra careful.

Also, depending on the procedure you had, you may have additional restrictions, such not being allowed to use a straw or limiting spicy or acidic foods. Pay close attention to instructions from your dentist.

Read below a safety testimonial from a patient of 10 years. As I walked through the door at Impeccable Smiles, I was greeted by Laura as she asked me to fill out a COVID-19 questionnaire form as I was doing that she took my temperature. I passed the temp check and then was asked to sit in the waiting room until they called my name. They are spacing patients out enough to only have one person at a time in the waiting room. They called my name, and I was taken back and asked the swish for 1 minute with Listerine before I entered the cleaning room. When I went in for my cleaning, all the chairs and instruments are wrapped in plastic covers. My dental hygienist made me feel very comfortable by wearing a level 3 mask, gloves, and hair bonnets. I had my x-rays done and then onto the cleaning, where my hygienist put on a face shield before proceeding with my cleaning. I appreciated that my cleaning room also had a HEPA/UV Germ Guardian Hospital Grade Air Purifier running. In between all procedures, the common areas were wipe down too. In the end, I swish for 1 minute again with Listerine. I was escorted out to the front desk and paid for my treatment. I left feeling very safe and knew that Impeccable Smiles always has my safety first. Thank you for making a dreaded visit a pleasure! Happy Patient July 2020

Many people in this world joke about how they do not like going to the dentist, but for many this is a terrifying reality that they must face. Fear of going to the dentist, also known as dentophobia, can usually be rooted to a certain traumatic event that may have taken place. Because of this crippling anxiety, which nearly 75% of the adult American population have some small degree of dentophobia, those who suffer put off going to the dentist. Luckily, with the advancements in modern medicine those who suffer with this fear do not have to do so any longer with sedation dentistry. Even if a fear of going to the dentist is keeping you from keeping your appointments, looking into sedation may be more of a benefit. Going regularly to your dentist is not only vital to making sure your teeth are healthy, but to make sure your overall health is being taken care of. Different types of sedation dentistry are available for the most anxious to the mildly nervous. Sedation dentistry uses the assistance of medication to help make the patient feel more relaxed while in the dentist’s chair. Ranging from minimally sedated, where you are awake but relaxed, to deep sedation, which is where you can be on the edge of consciousness but are still able to be awakened. General anesthesia is where the patient is totally unconscious. So you may be wondering what types of sedation are used to make you feel less nervous about going to the dentist. The first type of sedation is breathing in nitrous oxide (more commonly known as “Laughing gas”) which is combined with oxygen. Breathing in this mixture of gas helps to make the patient feel relaxed. This is a type of mild sedation that wears off quickly once the mask is removed. Oral sedation can be taken in pill form an hour before the procedure (this results in a mild form) while a heavier dose can be administered at the dentist office right before the procedure. An IV sedation is typically administered through a vein which makes the sedation work much more quickly. This also allows the dentist to adjust the levels of sedation throughout the procedure. For those who suffer more of a crippling anxiety when visiting the dentist, deep sedation or general anesthesia is available. These medications can cause the patients to become almost of completely unconscious while having the procedure done and not be awoken until the anesthesia naturally wears off. While most patients who receive sedation while visiting their dentist suffer nervousness, sedation can also be administered to patients who may have a low threshold for pain, children who cannot sit still during their visits, those with a bad gag reflex or suffer with sensitive teeth. While looking for sedation dentistry in Lutz, FL make sure to check out Impeccable Smiles. Not only does our office offer sedation dentistry, but it is our goal to make sure our patients feel as relaxed and comfortable in our dentist’s chair as they would in their favorite chair at home.
