Just imagine what you could do if you spent the budgets of 'Indian Summers', 'Beecham House' and 'The Singapore Grip' on one decent tv-series about British India...1857, Amritsar...

Siri, what is historically ignorant and egregiously jingoistic British exceptionalism?

Are Italy and Germany be faring better because their test and trace systems actually work, Boris is asked.
No, it turns out British people have to die because we're better than them, and we love freedom more than they do.
Every bit as bad as Trump. Utterly execrable.

Got off to a great start on #HST6747 Anxieties of Empire - talking about Orwell's 'Shooting an Elephant', students drew links to the concept of the 'White Man's Burden' as the psychological cost of imperialism to the coloniser; now just 23 weeks to problematise and unpack this!

My position on the PDF discourse is as follows: I've pirated textbooks for students who cannot afford them.
I've used my institutional access to provide colleagues with articles crucial to their research because they could not afford them.
Fuck your gatekeeping bullshit.

Academics don't get paid to write journal articles - instead *they* have to pay the publisher (in History in UK its approx £2k) to have their research open access. The system is broken...

STRONGLY considering tweeting out a thread about how elitist and removed from financial realities this entire PDF drama is. As someone from a country without the kind of reserves people in the US or UK seem to have, it's enraging to see.

A brief update on this from me. I strongly believe that Michael Buerk owes Nadine El-Enany an apology for what I think was bias on and off the air. I made that clear to those involved and explained why it was important.

Michael Buerk Andrew Doyle Nesrine Malik Mona Siddiqui & Tim Stanley didn't know I was still on the call after we recorded #MoralMaze @BBCRadio4 Here are quotes & approximations of what they said about me. We know how they speak about us but it's another thing to hear them do it twitter.com/NadineElEnany/…

I gave those involved time to discuss the matter and, as the new season starts soon and it has became clear that there would be no apology from Michael, I have given up my panel seat on the programme.

If you want to read a book on Saudi Arabia today by someone who truly knows every sand dune and has interviewed many tribal chiefs in that country, I highly recommend my old Oxford classmate David Rundell's new book: ``Vision or Mirage.''

History Channel has a lot to answer for. Decades of peddling bizarre conspiracy-theories and mainlining suspicion of government as seemingly innocuous entertainment. Who wants to do a Venn diagram of the people who took 'Ancient Aliens' seriously and anti-vaxxers and Qanon types?

can I urge my fellow white academics to consider that “keeping politics out of your twitter feed” *is* a political choice (one which your white privilege affords you)

Many academics recommend your twitter stay professional (eg just the science). The thing is I can’t stop being a Mexican American woman in academic contexts, and my identity guides my research and the questions I ask. My Twitter will be political bc my identity is politicized.

Teaching starts tomorrow so obviously today was the day to reorganise all my photocopies and research material. Gives me a great sense of procastinatory satisfaction to write out labels for different folders: 'Anxieties', 'Violence', 'My Lai', 'Dum-Dum' etc etc

We all have an obligation to write #UnpatrioticHistory because 'patriotic education' is explicitly aimed at whitewashing history and instrumentalising the past for a deeply insidious political project. The choice is between critical scholarship or propaganda.

Me and call dibs on #1898Project - which would require re-assessing US imperialism in a genuinely global comparative fashion.
