As advertised, you are getting 4 never released audio (cd) performances and 6 never released visual (dvd) performances. The great thing about this release, for dvd's, is that there really isn't a lot of previously made available for purchase performances. (Just the 2 main dvd releases I can think of + a few routines on some compilations discs - not counting the documentary American: The Bill Hicks Story.) SO, you are getting tons of stand-up routines that haven't been released before and some that most audiences may not have seen since their original performance - Laff Stop, Comic Annex, etc. Frankly, all this previously unreleased and unavailable material is worth the price of admission, and like for me, worth it to have to re-buy the cd's again.
This set is 5 stars no matter what, I mean, it is Bill Hicks.
However, the big drawbacks, while the cd's and dvd's are packaged in a cardboard slipcase - fine I suppose, he inner and outer cardboard packaging (of which this set is - all cardboard) is absolutely awful. I'm all fine for eco-friendly packaging I guess, but the flimsiness of this set is just plain ridiculous. Also, there is nothing written - as in no liner notes, no essays, no product description at all other than a brief paragraph on the back of the box describing what you're getting. (You do get a 48 pg photo book, which is nice - "Oh, look, it's Bill....") and that being said, you may want to hold on to those Rykodisc cd releases for all those liner notes and inner content.
Anyways for the material inside, the price is worth it. Long live Bill Hicks and his message. Love, Laughter, Truth.
I am editing this review since upon initial inspection I believed that the "Revelations" performance from the Dominion Theatre in London was not included. I also believed that the documentary "It's Just a Ride" was also missing from this set. However, after reading a comment left on my review (which should be of some interest to any Bill Hicks fans), I humbly admit that I was completely mistaken. Further examination of this set before posting a review likely would have prevented such an error, but I jumped the gun when I noticed my personal favorite performance was not listed among the DVD features.
Now that I feel like a jerk for having misrepresented the contents of the set in my first review, I'm tempted to redact ALL of my trivial gripes. However, with respect to future consumers, I'll keep my nagging opinions in tact as follows...
...while the packaging does look great, the discs are housed in cardboard sleeves that offer very little protection. When I received my set, several of the discs were loose and already scratched. Another minor quibble: there seems to be no rhyme or reason for the placement of the CDs... They're not in chronological nor alphabetical order; not even the 2 "Salvation" discs are housed together! A non-issue, really, but does seem lazy in the design department.
And as another reviewer pointed out, it would have been nice to have SOME information about the recordings. For instance, "Flying Saucer Tour Vol. 2" I assume is another complete show like the previous volume recorded in Pittsburgh (which WAS edited slightly), but it would be nice to know when & where this was recorded.
[Edit]: This is a very solid effort and I commend Comedy Dynamics [and the Hicks family] for putting together such a comprehensive set. The hours upon hours of laughter contained herein should satisfy newcomers and the most obsessive fans alike. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
That being said, this packaging is TERRIBLE. When I opened the package, most of the discs had fallen from the cheap box they're stored in. Little slits in cardboard to hold delicate DVDs and CDs, guaranteeing scratches upon removal or placement. That in itself is bad enough, but the discs WILL fall out if you even look at the box sideways. I've never seen such poor packaging on such an amazing product - did the guys who designed this even know who Bill was? I would have gladly paid DOUBLE to get this in secure packaging. I'm retuning this and it's a shame; Bill deserves better, but so do we.
UPDATE: I didn't return it because the seller wanted 25$ and change to ship it back to the UK. I feel I got ripped off out of around 100 dollars. I'll keep it, but the scratches make it unwatchable.
But the packaging was some of the absolute worst. Several discs slipped out during shipping and arrived scratched. Of course I didn’t discover this until a few months after purchase as I just don’t have the time to listen to and watch over 10 hours of material in a few days span anymore.
