Hello from Fuji Dog Farm
We passed the holidays, but the rainy season seems to continue longer than expected!
At the Dog Farm, we do not really have any holidays, but we currently have three staff members rotating the work to take care of the dogs.
We each look after nearly 30 dogs, so it is not easy work, but we try and take care of each of the dogs with love every day.
The one sitting at the front is Ray, a Kangal-mix.
She recently had her bottom haircut and is in a good mood
Today we will talk through you about "Career Change Dogs"!
Many people may have never heard of this term.
Or you may have heard of it, for example, as a career-changing guide dog for the blind.
Dogs that are a little timid towards interacting with people and dogs, or are approaching senior years and we think they would be happier if they were to spend more time at home are given away with a donation of 100,000 yen or more.
We carefully judge the owners through interviews, whether they will be properly be able to look after the dogs.
We often get a lot of questions such as:
"When therapy dogs are too old for their jobs, do you just give them away”
“Why do you take money to give away the dogs”
“Are they really safe to take care at home”
We are happy to answer these questions.
The first thing we would like to tell you is that a career-changing dog is not a dog that has behavioral problems or is completely unsuitable for therapy activities.
They are dogs who are able to adapt well when the environment and people change.
You might wonder why we say this…
The reason is because, the former president of our Japan Animal Therapy Association has excessively increased the number of dogs for the purpose of profit. As a result, there are many dogs that have not been carefully chosen to become therapy dogs.
Not so long ago at the dog farm, there were about 3 times the number of dogs as compared to now.
We replaced the current system two years ago and have been able to identify and solve many problems, but we are still dealing with many more. As we tackle these problems, we feel the necessity to carefully observe and choose the right owners of the dogs.
Many of these career-changing dogs are inexperienced in animal therapy activities or have not been able to adjust to various environments.
That is why we would like to choose the proper owners who will give the dogs plenty of love and affection, and hope that they will find more and more good things about the dog’s unique characteristic.
There is no bias in the love we give to our dogs, whether they are therapy dogs or career-changing dogs.
Although our staff has been limited, we believe it is not a good idea to just simply increase the number of staff, since we want people who have high aspirations and are able to take responsibility with living things.

This is Kichi and Genki, the Shiba Inu that moved from the farm to Kanagawa yesterday.
Two of the dogs are also being introduced as career changing dogs
We are in the final stages of our crowdfunding campaign and would appreciate your continued support
