こんにちは。

 

犬の牧場富士の里の奥村です。

 

最初に残念なお知らせですが、

エアデールテリアのリンカーンが今朝亡くなりました。

 

10歳でした。

 

 

 

相棒を残し、虹の橋を渡ってしまいました。

 

リンカーンは幼少期からずっと、ここ、富士の里で暮らしてきました。

子供の頃は、100頭を超える犬たちが、富士の里では生活をしていたはずです。

 

ちょうと8月で10歳を迎えたばかり。

 

屋外で暮らす犬の中では現在最高齢です。

 

一昨日から口からの出血、血尿など、

暑さの影響もあり、かなり弱っていましたので、

近くの社宅で療養し、かかりつけの病院にも行きました。

 

即日入院し、助かる保障はないものの、

できる限りのことをして頂きましたが、力尽きてしまいました。

 

 

先日、セントバーナードを2頭見送ったばかり。

この暑さの影響もありますが、最期まで本当によく頑張ってくれました。

 

いや、もう、頑張ってなんて言えません。

 

一日でも早く、みんな過ごしやすい場所に行って欲しい。

とにかく、もうこんな大変な思いはさせたくないと、

私たちも日々、向き合ってきました。

 

次々と犬たちが力尽きていきます。

 

リンカーンの亡骸を車に乗せて、

火葬場に行く道中、いろいろなことを考えました。

 

亡くなっていく子たちの最期は、みんなあっという間で、

悲しむ間もないくらいなんです。

 

そして皆、とても穏やかな顔で眠っているような顔なんです。

 

彼ら、彼女らは何を思い、この世を去っていったのか。

ほんと、前日までニコニコしながら体をすり寄せてくれた子たち。

 

最期まで私たちに笑顔と元気をくれました。

 

「僕たちのことを最期までみてくれてありがとう。

　これ以上、スタッフの皆さんを苦しめたくないから。

　先にいくね。残されたみんなのことよろしくね。」

 

そんな風に犬たちが言ってくれているようで、

何とも言えない気持ちになります。

 

純粋な犬たちのことを考えると、

いま、私たちの協会が置かれている状況が、

何とも空しく、儚く、無力に感じざるを得ません。

 

エアコンの涼しい風を浴びさせてあげたい。

きれいなお水を毎日飲ませてあげたい。

清潔な環境で暮らさせてあげたい。

ずっと愛してくれる親を探してあげたい。

 

極当たり前のことかもしれませんが、

富士の里の子たちにとっては、当たり前ではありません。

 

ピーク時は150頭を超える犬たちが暮らしていたのです。

 

『1万頭の犬、1万人のセラピスト、1万人の会員』

 

前理事長は高々とビジョンを掲げ、組織を拡大していきました。

 

1歳にも満たない子に交配をさせたり、

珍しい犬だからという理由で、客寄せパンダ目的で交配を続けたり、

その子たちをお世話するひとのこと、何より犬たちのことは考えず、

とにかく営利目的に走ってしまったのです。

 

「犬は金稼ぎの手段でしかない」

 

すべての活動は偽善だったのでしょうか。

ここからは監事という立場で書かせて頂きます。

客観性を重視しますが、私も人間ですので感情があります。

間違ったことは書きませんが、

やや感情的に書いてしまう点についてはお許し下さい。

 

私の主な役割は業務・会計監査です。

 

とっても簡単に言うと、

 

理事がちゃんと仕事してるか、

お金の管理ができているかを監督する仕事です。

 

私が就任するまでは、自身が言うのも憚れますが、

監事は完全に機能不全でした。

 

過去の監事に対し、誹謗中傷はしたくありませんが、

やはり多くのご支援下さる皆様のご寄付や、

世の中からの期待を背負っている訳です。

どのような理由で就任されているかは知り得ませんが、

調べていると、前理事長が意図的に、何も言えないような人物を、

監事や、理事に割り当てているところがありました。

 

致命的なのが、みな「理事」という役割を分かっていないこと。

 

理事長が何もさせてくれない、トップダウン、意見したら倍返しにされる・・

といったような圧が、理事にもかかっていたことは事実だと思いますが、

NPOは理事長のために存在する組織なのでしょうか。

 

違いますよね。

 

自身も甘い蜜を吸っている時は、

ペコペコしていたり、崇めたりしている訳です。

 

そして、何か不正が発覚したり、この世を去ってしまうと、

一気に批判が始まるのは、あまりにも都合が良いです。

 

 

私たちの協会はいまそれが少なからず起こっています。

 

 

私は過去の会計に関する資料（預金通帳、キャッシュカード、クレジットカードなど）

法人運営に関するものに限らず、あらゆる資料を漁っています。

正直、見たくないものも沢山出てきます。

もう、目を背けたくなるような事実も受け入れなければなりません。

それでも真実を突き止め、責任ある人間には、

相応の償いをしてもらいたいと思っています。

 

前理事長の名誉のために・・と言いたいところですが、

もう、常識のレベルを超えていますし、

なぜこのようなトップが存在してしまったのか、悔やみきれません。

 

法人通帳からは、沢山のご寄付、募金活動、施設訪問などで集められたお金が、

定期的に引き出されています。その額は都度、100万円単位です。

法人口座に振り込ませずに、個人口座に振り込ませていたり、

自身の管理する通帳は誰にも触らせず、その他の口座預金は、

経理担当に指示し、自身の管理している口座に集約させていました。

 

定期的に引き出された金額については現在集計中ですが、

年間、数千万円にも及びます。

 

クレジット明細などもすべてチェックしていますが、

高級ホテル、飲食、ブランド品購入など、常識の範疇を圧倒的に超えるものばかりです。

親族にも700万円を超える協会のお金が流れていました。

親族関係者は連絡がつかなかったり、お茶を濁されたりと、

明快な回答を得られていない状況ですが、必ずクリアにします。

 

 

なぜ、これほどまでにトップを自由にさせてしまったのか。

 

 

前理事長がもつカリスマ性や経営センスなども、もちろんあったと思います。

組織の作り方も、ある種合理的ですし、とりわけ側近は洗脳に近い関係性で、

がんじがらめにされています。

 

しかし、これはトップだけの責任と言えるのか。

 

 

私はNOと言いたいです。

 

当時の役員は何を思い、理事を引き受け、

そしてトップの独走を許してしまったのでしょうか。

 

それはきっと、どこかで自分も良い思いをしていたり、

今の関係性を断ち切ってまで、反論することはリスクが大き過ぎると

判断したのだと思います。

 

フィクションドラマだったらまだ、面白く見ていられます。

 

ただ、これはノンフィクションで、すべて現実に起こっていることなんです。

 

NPOが必死に活動して得たお金を、

根こそぎ現金化、カード決済し、私利私欲のために使い込み、

そのために、来る日も来る日も、犬たちは街頭で募金を募ったり、

慣れない施設訪問を続けたり、狭い犬舎で自由を奪われている訳です。

 

 

私たちはどこを向いて仕事をしているのか？

 

 

それは社会であり、多くの支援者であり、

何より犬たちにリスペクトがないと全てが無意味です。

 

 

過去の投稿でも書かせて頂きましたが、

すべてをトップの責任にするのではなく、

そもそもNPOのスタッフとして、本当に当事者意識を強く持ち、

活動ができていたのか、社会に胸を張れる、誇れる活動であったのか、

私は当時のスタッフ一人ひとりにも問いたいです。

 

 

何度も言います。

 

 

残されるのは犬です。

 

 

私たちの協会に限らず、

世の中には、まだまだ多くの保護犬や、

恵まれない動物が存在しています。

 

 

ひとの都合で動物が生かされる世の中にしてはいけません。

 

 

営利、非営利関係なく、

もっとひとは誠実であって欲しい。

 

アニマルセラピーはひとが癒されるだけの活動ではありません。

動物も癒される必要があります。

お互いに癒され、活力が湧き、元気になれる活動です。

 

ひとのエゴで行う活動は無くすべきです。

 

 

前理事長時代の悪しき運営体制は、

決して許されるものではありません。

対外的には良くみえていたとしてもです。

中身が伴わないと、意味がありません。

 

 

現在、私たちの協会は大きく方向転換をする時期に差し掛かっています。

 

 

良い方向転換をするためにも、

過去を過去のままでは終わらせず、

きっちり清算をし、次に進みます。

 

志半ばでこの世を去った犬たち、

今も頼れるオーナーを探している犬たちのためにも、

皆の仇は必ずとります。

　　所轄庁への報告、法的措置含めて対応を進めております。

This is Okumura from Fuji Dog Farm.

 

 

 

I am sorry to inform you first about this.

 

Our Airedale Terrier, Lincoln, passed away this morning.

 

 

 

He was 10 years old.

Lincoln, an Airedale Terrier,

 

 

With his buddy, Aire.

 

 

He left his buddy and crossed the rainbow bridge.

 

 

Lincoln has lived here at Fuji Dog Farm all his life, since he was a child.

 

Back then, there must have been over 100 dogs living in Fuji Dog Farm.

 

 

 

He had just turned 10 years old in August.

 

 

 

He was the oldest dog living outdoors.

 

 

 

He had been bleeding from his mouth and urinating blood in the last 2 days and was quite weak due to the heat.

We took him to a nearby company home to recuperate and then took him to the vet.

 

 

 

He stayed at the vet that day and although there was no guarantee that he would survive, the vet did everything he could, but Lincoln was out of strength.

 

 

 

We just sent off two St. Bernards the other day.

 

The heat has taken its toll on them, but they did really well until the end.

 

 

No, I can't say "they did well" anymore.

 

 

I want them all to get to a comfortable place as soon as possible.

 

We have been tackling the issues every day, because we don't want our dogs to have to go through this hard time anymore.

 

 

But one after another, the dogs are running out of steam.

 

 

As we drove to the crematorium with Lincoln's body in the car, I thought about a lot of things on the way.

 

 

The last days of all these dogs who are passing away are so fleeting, we don't even have enough time to grieve.

 

 

And they all look so peaceful, like they are sleeping.

 

 

 

What were they thinking about when they left this world?

 

They were the ones who smiled and came snuggled up to us until the day before.

 

They gave us smiles and energy until the end of their lives.

 

 

 

“Thank you for seeing us to the end of our lives.

 

　I don't want to cause any more pain to the staff.

 

　I'll go ahead. Take care of the rest of us.”

 

 

That's what the dogs seemed to be saying to me, and I am lost for words.

 

 

I think of those innocent dogs. The situation our association finds itself in right now I can't help but feel so empty, fragile and helpless.

 

 

 

I want to give them a cool breeze from the air conditioner.

 

I want to give them clean water to drink every day.

 

I want to give them a clean environment to live in.

 

I want to find them a family who will love them forever.

 

 

It may be a very obvious thing to do, but this is not the norm for the dogs at Fuji Dog Farm.

 

 

At its peak, there were more than 150 dogs living here.

 

 

“10,000 dogs, 10,000 therapists and 10,000 members.”

 

 

 

The former president of JATA had a proud vision and expanded the organization.

 

 

He allowed dogs as young as one year old to breed, found rare dogs and made them breed for the purpose of attracting customers.

 

He didn't think about the staff who would be caring for those dogs, and most importantly, he didn't think about the dogs. He had just pursued profit.

 

“Dogs are just a way to make money.”

 

Was all the activity a hypocrisy?

From here on out I will be writing as an auditor.

I will try to be objective as possible, but because I am human I also have feelings.

I will only write the truth, but please forgive me for writing somewhat emotionally.

 

 

My main role is to audit operations and accounts.

 

 

 

To be very brief,

 

My job is to check if the board is doing its job, and if the money is being managed properly.

 

 

 

Before I took this role, I am not afraid to say this myself, but the auditor was completely dysfunctional.

 

 

 

I don't want to cast aspersions on past auditors, but I am burdened with the donations of many people who support us and their expectations.

 

The reason why the former auditor was appointed remains unclear, but I found out that the former president had intentionally assigned the auditors and board members to people who had no say in the matter.

 

 

The critical thing is that they all did not understand the role of a "board member".

 

 

 

It's true that the president did not allow them to do anything, and if they expressed their opinions, they may have got a double payback. However, is the NPO an organization that exists for the president?

 

 

 

No, it's not.

 

 

 

When taking the advantage, they are bow down or worship.

 

And if something injustice is discovered, or if they leave this world, they begin to criticize all at once. That is too convenient.

 

 

Our association is experiencing more than a little of that now.

 

 

 

I have been going through all kinds of documents related to accounting in the past (deposit books, cash cards, credit cards, etc.), not just those related to corporate operations.

 

Frankly, I find a lot of stuff I wish not to see.

 

But we must accept some facts that we no longer want to turn away from.

 

 

We want to find out the truth and make sure that the people responsible for this are given the right penalty that they deserve.

 

 

I wish I could say, for the sake of the former president… 

but it's already beyond the level of common sense, and I cannot mourn enough why we allowed such a top executive to be there.

 

 

The money collected through donations, fundraising, and visits to facilities had been regularly withdrawn from the corporate account book. The amount goes up to millions of yen.

The former president had made some of the transfer to go to his own personal account, making sure no one touches it, and extracted some of the money from the cooperate account.

 

 

We are currently tallying up the amounts withdrawn on a regular basis. It amounts to tens of millions of yens a year.

 

 

I also check all of the association’s credit statements, and they are all overwhelmingly beyond the bounds of common sense. Luxury hotels, foods and drinks, luxury brand purchases, etc.

 

Over $7 million of the association's money was also flowing to the president’s relatives.

 

We are having difficulty getting in touch with these relatives and have not been able to get a clear answer to this situation, but we will make sure we clear it up.

 

 

Why did we let the top management have so much freedom?

 

 

I think it was partly due to the charisma and management sense of the former president, of course.

There is somewhat a rationality behind the organization of the association, and especially the entourage, which is almost a brainwashing relationship.

 

 

But can we say that this is only the responsibility of the top management?

 

 

 

I would say NO.

 

 

 

What were the board members thinking at the time, taking on the board and then allowing the president to run the association alone?  

 

I'm sure it was because somewhere along the line they felt good about the situation too, or decided that it was too risky to argue with the president and to cut off their current relationship.

 

 

If this were a fictional drama, I would find it interesting to watch.

 

But this is non-fiction and it's all happening in real life.

 

 

Day in and day out, dogs were on the streets raising money, were visiting unfamiliar shelters, and were being deprived of their freedom in cramped kennels, all to raise money for the association, but in fact those money was used for self-serving expenses.

 

 

Where do we look at while working?

 

 

The answer is, towards society, towards many supporters, and most importantly, it's all meaningless if there is no respect towards the dogs.

 

 

As I have written in past posts, I don't blame everything on the top management.

I want to ask all staff members, as a member of a non-profit organization, , if they really had a strong sense of ownership, if they were really proud of their activities, if those activities were really beneficial to the society.

 

 

I will repeat this many times.

 

 

It's the dogs that are left behind.

 

 

 

And not just in our society, but there are still a lot of abandoned dogs and many more underprivileged animals in the world.

 

We must not make the world a place where animals are kept alive for the convenience of humans.

 

 

 

Regardless of whether it's for profit or non-profit.

 

We want people to be more sincere.

 

 

 

 

Animal therapy is not just about healing people.

 

Animals also need to be healed.

 

It is an activity that heals both of us and makes us both feel energized.

 

 

 

Activities conducted for the sake of human ego should not exist.

 

 

 

The bad management system of the former president was definitely not acceptable.

 

Even if it looks good to the outside world.

 

It is meaningless if it is not accompanied by its substance.

 

 

 

 

It is time for our association to make a major change in direction.

 

 

In order to do so, in the right direction, we must first clear off the dirty past, to be reborn with clean slate.

 

 

For the dogs, who died in the steaming heat.

For the dogs that are still looking for a reliable family,

We will do our best for them.
