NTFS 5 is the advanced version of the NTFS, New Technology File system which was introduced for Windows NT operating System. Because of its high reliability, Fault Tolerance and Security, it has become the most preferred file system to all other Windows based OS like Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 etc. NTFS5 cannot be used to format the Floppy Disk and is recommended for the Volumes larger than 32GB. NTFS5 has all the features of the NTFS file system along with some of the performance improvements and upgraded features.
Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server, Windows 2008 Server, Windows Vista, Windows 7.
NTFS5 Features:
NTFS5 Log: NTFS5 is a resumable file system, which can maintain the consistency of the partitions with the help of transaction log; in case of system failures. The transaction log records all the changes done to the partition by using USN (Update Sequence Number) journal log and check point information. With these, NTFS 5 will automatically recover your partition to its default consistency.
File Encryption: NTFS5 encrypts the files using a random generation key, which can be controlled only by the owner and the administrator. In case of NTFS 4.0 the encrypted files can be easily read by installing another Windows NT. However, in case of NTFS5, it cannot be decrypted even by installing another Windows OS. Hence, data security is the main aspect in NTFS5.
Disk Quota: To manage the disk space and utilize the available space in an effective way NTFS 5 has introduced a feature called Disk Quota. With this, administrator allots some disk space limit to every user by quota limit and the user can use the disk space only within the limit provided by the administrator. Once the disk quota is set, the disk space utilized by the user will be monitored by the administrator. Thus, this helps the administrator to allocate the resources to the users in a convenient way.
Dynamic disk: It is a NTFS5 feature, where users can change the partition size online even without formatting, restarting or without log out. Also, if your NTFS 5 partition is having some important information, it allows you to create the mirrored image of this partition dynamically and save it for further usage. While creating this image user can easily read and write the documents in the partition simultaneously and in case you don’t need then you could cancel the process at any instant.
Reparse Points: These points are used to trap operations on objects and then run the applications even before returning the data to the user. It is used to extend file system features and support.
Volume Mount Points: These points are the file system objects that use the reparse points and let the users to map the folder to an entire volume. These Volume Mount Points allow users and administrators to extend the capacity of the volume without repartitioning or migrating your data. It also provides additional file-system namespace flexibility and permits your to build the hybrid volumes that has numerous storage classes.
Sparse Files: These are special types of files of NTFS5 that has an attribute to allocate space only for the non-zero data i.e. meaningful data and the rest non-meaningful data will not be allocated. When this file is read, the allocated data will be reverted as it was stored and for non-allocated ones, zeros will be returned by default.
