After his death a new wave of revolts would start in the form of Khurramites. He was a chemist, and one of his experiments caused an explosion in which a part of his face was burnt. For the rest of his life he used a veil and thus was known as "al-Muqanna‘" ("The Veiled One").

In 39 BC when Parthian Īrānshahr conquered Israel/Palestine a popular saying rose up in the Levant that "when a Persian horseman would again tie his horse in a Palestinian graveyard, the Messiah would come" because of the Parthian warriors and their disdain for the Philistines.

Babak was defeated on the battlefield only by an Iranian prince from Transoxiana, Khaydar pur Kavus. He's referred to as "Afshin", but this is a princely title, not his name. Even then, Babak's final defeat was due to betrayal.

After his death the Khurramites split off into several factions who disguised themselves mainly as Shia Muslims in order to spread their influence. Most notable being Qarmatians and Tahir Jannabi who'd go on to commit genocide in the Arabian peninsula multiple times.

Several explanations have been offered by our sources for the term Khurram-din; one derives it from Khurrama, the name of the alleged wife of Mazdak. The preferred explanation is of course the one which derives it from the Persian word khurram “ happy, cheerful”

This is why scholars come to the consensus that the root of the Khorram-Dinān movement began with Abu Khorasani Vandad Hormoz as he'd cover himself with the disguise of Islam - many of his followers also disguised themselves as Shias to be able to conquer the middle east.

Similar to to Yarsanis and Yazidis of today, the Khurramites hid their belief in Zoroastrianism, Mazdeanism and Mithraism by cloaking its Zoroastrian doctrine with Islamic terms to avoid prosecution. An example being they hid literature by calling the Zoroastrian Gods "Imams".

Though openly a Neo-Zoroastrian movement, much of the Khurramite followers disguised themselves as Muslims and were crypto Zoroastrians - to avoid prosecution and commence easier assassinations on caliph officials.
