Overview:

The City of Newisle is a modern Minecraft city that started with one goal: make a detailed and eye catching city skyline. And it became much, much more than that. The project began all the way back in August of 2010 during the early alpha days and has been kept alive ever since. It's been done entirely solo and is my one and only world save to date – and it's now one of the oldest Minecraft maps that is still actively updated to this day.

Newisle is not a 1:1 scale map with a bunch of beautifully designed but empty buildings. It's a functioning place meant to be played like a Minecraft world. You'll find stocked shops, apartment buildings and homes, office towers, minecart-powered transit lines and a variety of places meant to make it feel like a real, livable place within Minecraft. It can be used for survival scenarios, custom servers, roleplay and everything in between.

Since its early days of crude cobblestone structures and basic materials the city has grown substantially into a wide-reaching modern metropolis. Littered with historic monuments, crisscrossing rail lines and hundreds of fully furnished buildings; there's no shortage of sites to see around Newisle and beyond – there are also 6 other independent cities and towns to explore outside of the core city. Though they're smaller and with less stuff, they each have their own vibe and story as well.

Grab a minecart from Union Station or set out on foot using the highway system. A world map file is included with each download to help you get around this massive world. It's yours to explore, survive or destroy as you see fit!

FAQ:

Q: Did this really take over 10 years to build?
A: It was built over the course of 10 years, not 10 years straight. I'm dedicated, but jeez, I haven't lost my mind. This was strictly a casual project by someone who likes cityscapes and urban planning. I took a bunch of breaks that ranged from weeks, months and even well over a year at one point. To put it simply, Newisle became one of those "too big to abandon" projects that I updated in between other hobbies and interests. Adding one or two buildings every once in a while just adds up over time.

Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: New. Isle. Like "New Island." No, it's not "Newsie," "News Aisle," or "New Whistle" (lol - I've heard these all). It was originally a series of islands that I linked together back in the alpha days.

Q: What inspired you to build this map?
A: Besides having a bit of an interest in urban planning, I like skyline and cityscape photography a lot, so Newisle is kind of an extension of that. The buildings themselves are inspired by my real world home city of Toronto as well as New York, Chicago and Montreal.

Q: What game version does this map use?
A: The map was worked on up until PC version 1.12, so your best bet is to stick to that or later versions. Earlier versions of Minecraft PC may corrupt the save file since this uses blocks from 1.12.

Q: Does this work on Pocket Edition/Windows 10/consoles?
A: Yes, but be sure to download the specially made 'Bedrock Edition' port. You can download it here.

Q: Is there a server with this map that I can join?
A: Yes. Please join the official Discord server to get access to the City of Newisle dedicated server. You'll need Java version 1.16.2 to join.

Q: Can I use your map for my project or server?
A: Of course. As long as you provide credit where credit is due I'm supportive of anything the Minecraft community does with this map (e.g. if you're doing a YouTube video, a link to this page in your description would be much appreciated).

Q: Is Newisle kid-friendly?
A: Yes. There aren't any signs with swear words or any questionable content. I've made sure to keep the map tame so that all ages can enjoy it.

Q: What's the world seed?
A: The seed is -3955966261899637229. However, the seed is probably pointless to put in when generating a new world. Newisle is so heavily terraformed that a new map will look nothing like the landscape in this one.

Q: Was this built in Survival?
A: No, the map began when Creative mode didn't exist yet but ever since Creative was introduced I've used it exclusively and have never claimed otherwise.

Q: Did you use any editing software?
A: Yes, I used WorldPainter for some of the more detailed terrain, such as the mountains, and for smoothing out parts of the map that had gotten ruined by game updates over the years. I also used MC Edit for many tedious things like placing roads and for precise tasks like doing multiple stories in the buildings or putting in identical subway tunnels. Otherwise, there would have been countless times when builds would be 1 or 2 blocks off and would have needed a complete restart. And who would want to do that?

Q: What did you use to make the maps with (the images that come with the download)?
A: They are all my own creations in Photoshop.

Version 1.2: The 'Mainland Expansion' Update - August 24, 2019

What's new?

- University of Newisle campus added
- Public schools, police stations, fire stations, post offices and two new hospitals added
- All new Riverdale, University of Newisle and Salem neighbourhoods added – Newisle mainland completely filled in
- Ridge Park and Waterfront Trail revitalized with new paths and decor
- More public art and statues
- Over 50 new buildings in inner Newisle
- Most roads in inner Newisle widened substantially

- Union Station demolished and 100% remade
- New subway line linking U of N, Loma Vista, Scarborough, Nortown and Bainbrook stations added
- New subway line linking Birch Shore, Olde Town and Eastcliff stations added
- New subway line linking Luna, Horizon, Azalea and Salem stations added
- Subway lines renumbered: U-1 to U-7 for Underground lines, S-1 to S-5 for Surface lines. 12 subway lines span the City of Newisle now.
- -= Highway 3 =- linking Newisle to Tumbleweed added

- Stores across the entire map now have colour-coded awnings and grocery stores have actual food (instead of bookshelves)

Yes, just download the Bedrock Edition. I recommend getting the Addons app by Kayen Works for an easy installation. It's a free Minecraft map app available on Android and iOS.

Hey blip.... I've been working with newisle and have introduced some improvements. Ive used Instant massive structures mod for the new roads and mainly expanded northwest. Ill upload it here at somepoint. It's based around newisle 1.2. it is best played with personal cars. 1.4 installed. It needs some fixing but when that's done I'll upload it here.

I'm not entirely sure. I think realistically there are somewhere between 1 and 2 thousand residential units when all the apartments and single family homes are added together.

Not at all. While Project Zearth is a wonderful map it wouldn't be in the spirit of either project to combine the two.

We have references to each other's maps in each map though, so I do like to think of Project Zearth as a place in the world of Newisle that a citizen could visit.
