Pretty big news that I forgot to report on. The leader of the Kasnazani Sufi order in Iraq has passed away. This is a big Sufi Tariqa in Iraq and Western Iran with Kurdish and Arab followers of both the Sunni and Shia sects of Islam.

For many many years our Assyrian neighbors would distribute harissa during Muharram. The neighborhood is no longer defined by their presence. A shame that dishonors Baghdad for decades to come.

To be clear: there is no other Western democracy I can think of where armed men in camo and other military-style gear regularly turn up on the streets of cities and towns, who aren't themselves anything to do with law enforcement but who get left alone by law enforcement.

The idea that we’re all just muslim and sects don’t exist is usually taught by people who aren’t educated on the difference, people who aren’t religious enough to care, or those who believe other sects are Kuffar. It does nothing to educate against and remedy sectarianism.

U do realize that u can still raise ur kids as shia/sunni and teach them that other sects exists and should be respected because we’re all Muslim. I don’t see the point of ignoring the existence of sects

If you're a Muslim in the Levant you're ethinically/genetically and culturally/religiously NOT native. You can't change the former, but the least you could do is convert to Christianity.

The mental toll that living in #Gaza has on a person is far greater than any shortage of electricity, food, space, clean water...etc. Gaza’s residents need mental health care in the form of on-the-ground resources and professionals, unfortunately none of that is available.

The earliest non-Muslim mention of the death of Husayn b. ‘Ali (ܚܘܣܝܢ ܒܪܥܠܝ) on Ashura is mentioned in the Syriac chronicle of Elias of Nisbis (d. 1046). But oddly Elias tells us Husayn was killed on the road to Mecca by Amru b. Sa’d b. Abi Waqas.
